Bus services to Tel Aviv from Ben Gurion International Airport and most Israeli cities are frequent, cheap, and efficient.
Tel Aviv has a modern, regular and widespread bus network run mostly by a company called Dan. The New Central Bus Station in southern Tel Aviv ("Tahana Merkazit", officially the world's biggest bus station!) offers routes servicing most locations in Israel. It is located within a short walking distance of the HaHaganah Train Station.

Dan is the main bus company of Tel-Aviv. While you can usually just walk around in Tel-Aviv, which is not too big and have virtually no hills, sometimes a bus is required. If you plan to stay a long time and go around the city, you should consider one of the monthly cards (the price depends on the zone covered by the card). The busses covers the entire metropolitan area of Tel-Aviv (called Dan, whence the company name).

The daily free pass can be bought from 9am and can be used until the bus service ends.
Hop on and off the buses as much as you wish. The picture will explain more.

I have only written about Tel Aviv and environs, but other cities have them too.

The Carmelit terminal is called this way because it is located near the carmel market (in haifa there is also a carmelit but the name is because of the carmel mountain).

A lot of lines come and go from this terminal.

The most popular mode of travel is the bus. Busses are inexpensive and the newer ones are very comfortable. Don't be afraid to ask the driver or other passengers for help in identifying your stop. Because of the long distance, some people choose to fly to Eilat (under $200 in early 2000), but it's usually part of the itinerary on student trips traveling by bus.

Buses and Sherroot in TA go everywhere at an average price of 5 NIS as per 03/2008.
Stops are well posted and routes easy to understand.
Drivers are reasonably helpful but do not expect them to be nice.

Egged is the largest bus company in Israel and provides transportation between almost anywhere in Israel.
Their website is not as efficient in English as in the original Hebrew, but I am told they are working on improving its user friendliness.

By bus! From the main busstation busses go everywhere! I took bus nr 4 and could come to Allebystreet, Ben Yehudastreet and surrounding with it. Handy. Near Allenbystreet is a busstop where the bus to the airport stops by the way.

Buses, sheruts (mini-vans or shared taxis) and taxis ply the over-congested streets of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Transport is generally cheap. One price bus and sherut fares (NIS 5 and NIS 4.50 - approx $1) for journey: an average taxi fare is around NIS 15-20 ($3-4) for most destinations within the city (as long as you get the taxi driver to put the meter on: taxi drivers will sometimes quote you a price. Rarely will it be less than NIS 5 more than the fare should be). Taxis drive with their lights on whether they are free or not - you just have to flag one down until one stops! Get in when it does - wait until you're seated before telling the destination. If you don;t like the price quoted, tell the driver to stop and get out. A Sherut you flag down anywhere - mainly the red & white mini-buses that unfortunately only travel along main road destinations (predominatly north-south). Hand your money either as you get on or take a seat and pass your money forward. Don;t worry - your change will be passed back. Buses I do not advise on using due to the current situation.
