Dead Sea II

by leffe3

No matter what, the real attraction of the Dead Sea is to challenge 'gravity' and see if you can float. No worries. You do! And we have all seen the photos of people reading while floating, and it can be so:).But a couple of words of warning. The water is seriously salty - so don't shave, wax or whatever process you use to remove hair. It hurts!!! (cuts and abrasions give you the same result).Don't try to swim 'normally' (front crawl etc) - any water in your eyes and you are in big trouble (and in the swimming pools in the surrounding hotels where they use Dead Sea water, children under 16 are not allowed - especially younger ones who are confused by floating in the water). If you take a book out with you, remember you've got to get it back to the shore! LOL. Believe me, it's difficult - holding the book with one hand and only half paddling back to the shore. And it's a mighty weird...

Dead Sea

by leffe3

The lowest point on earth, some 400 metres below sea level. Float in the salt and phosphate saturated waters, hike in the surrounding mountains or go for a spa in one of the upmarket hotels. It's a stunning place - the colours, the salt deposits, the dry heat and the fact that you are so far below sea level. It's disorientating looking up the surrounding arid cliffs towering above you and realising that the top is moreorless at sea level. Ein Boqeq at the far southern end is the main hotel concentration (and near to the the salt works) with the kibbutz of Ein Gedi approximately in the 'middle' also offering accommodation and beach access. The Dead Sea (or Yam Ha'melech in Hebrew - the Sea of Salt) is sadly slowly disappearing - a mix of over-extraction of the minerals from both the Israeli and Jordanian side and lack of natural water replenishment. Seeing the shoreline, in some places,...

Masada

by leffe3

One of the most important Jewish sites in Israel. The story has been made famous by the movie, of the 1000 occupying Jewish forces (the fortified Masada complex was actually built by Herod) who made a last stand against the Romans and which, with the mass suicide of men, women and children, effectively ended the Great Revolt aginst the Romans.Herod knew what he was doing when he chose the site for his palace - high above the Dead Sea on a free-standing, sheer-sided plateau. The views are spectacular - the barren mountains on three sides disappearing into the distance. There is not a great deal left standing at the top, but what there is is interesting enough, and the sheer size of the place is awe-inspiring.It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the car park, you can either get the cable car or walk up Snake Path. Whilst hard, the latter is not quite so arduous as it looks (but take...

The Dead Sea

by Maria81

Where? On the border between Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank in the Jordan Rift ValleyWhat? With shores and surface over 1,250ft below the sea level, the lake is one of the most salty lakes in the world - there is a debate as to whether it is, in fact, the saltiest. Today, the lake is a major spa centre (since the times of Herod the Great, in fact), and also a source of cosmetics and beauty products. The lake is also one of the densest bodies of water, making it practically impossible to drown, regardless of how inept at swimming one might be. There are a number of public beaches on the Israeli side, all offering lockers, towels, a cafe', as well as a souvenir shop. Although most tourists visit on a day trip from either Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, there are a number of hotels in the area for those who would prefer to be close by.

The Dead Sea

The only place on the globe where the crust of planet Earth recedes to an "in-depth low" of minus 416 meters below sea level. 330 days a year of sun that caresses sunbathers through atmospheric filters with the least chance of sun-burning. The air that is miraculously dry, unpolluted, pollen-free, the air that purifies respiratory systems also filters and softens solar radiation.he Living Dead Sea is the only un-drownable lake on earth. Travellers from afar make the distance just for the sensation of reclining into its salty water, floating in armchair, reading position.and leaving the worries of the world behind them. An assortment of mineral waters of various qualities is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments, as well as for manufacturing of the famous Dead Sea cosmetics lines. Drinking water comes from underground aquifer reservoirs by hydro-energy. Mineral-rich springs,...

A must!

by sheherezad

> Please can anyone assist and give me an idea whether we should sleep in Jerusalem as opposed to a day trip and also how we can incorporate the dead sea.. If I were you, I would do more than a day trip to soak in the Old City, especially :-) If you are Jewish, you should definitely visit the Al Kotel (even if you are not religious, it should be a must, as visiting the Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock is for Muslims and the Church of Holy Sepulchre and Via Dolorosa for Christians! And all of them for me!).You might regret doing just a day trip - I was in East Jerusalem for 9 days (2 weekends plus a congress in my field during the week) but went back to the Old City for lunch before leaving for Tel Aviv for my flight to Amman. I had to see it again! One last time! It 'got' me and I'm not even religious! You can do the Dead Sea from Jerusalem on a tour - I chose Nazareth and the Sea of...
