Many visitors come to experience enjoyment of being in the snow, take a ride on the cable car and spend time in various sport facilities: the mountain sleds snow slides. prices and visiting hours can be found on the Website.

The River Jordan at Kibbutz Kinneret (Yardenit)

by VeronicaG

I'm sure most tourists traveling to this part of the world are already acquainted with the River Jordan and its Biblical history. We traveled to the Kibbutz Kinneret (or Yardenit) to experience what many have made a point to do when visiting Israel...to be baptized in the River Jordan.Yardenit is located in a quiet part of the river where no swimming is permitted. An entrance fee of $10 admits you to the changing room, where you pick up a long white pull over gown--keep in mind it becomes fairly transparent when you are in the water*. Various points on the river hold sturdy platforms surrounded by rows of seating. I would advise holding on to the railing provided as you ease yourself down a gently sloping ramp to where the water is deep enough for the immersion.I was so excited, I forgot to be thinking holy thoughts (pic #2)--but I've got my certificate stating I was indeed baptized in...

A Day at Ein Gedi Spa and the Dead Sea

by VeronicaG

Our group had a dilemma, with only so much time available we had to decide whether to opt for a relaxing morning at the Spa and a swim in the Dead Sea or chose the historic route and visit Masada. Most selected the Spa...the six of us remaining hopped back onto the bus.The spa offers a beach on the Dead Sea, oozy black mud and hot sulphur pools. Hours are 7am-6pm in the summer, 5pm in the winter. A fee is charged. Visitors are cautioned to drink plenty of water and to use sunblock liberally!A day at the beach and a traditional Dead Sea 'float' gave our travelers the photo op they craved. They all had a great time! After the six of us returned from Masada, we joined them in the Spa cafeteria* for lunch.*Hours for the Spa restaurant are 11:30am-4pm. See restaurant tips for more info.

Hiking the En Gedi

by VeronicaG

Hiking the Ein Gedi was exciting! After going our separate ways to either the Ein Gedi spa or Masada, we regrouped to visit the Ein Gedi Nature Reserves. Advised to wear sturdy hiking shoes, we discovered quickly the wisdom in doing so. Scrambling over boulders and climbing up and down narrow paths made traction necessary. To our delight, we saw a mother and baby Ibex along the way (pic 4) and several other Ibex on the hillsides. As we approached a sheer cliff, several these creatures balanced precariously on thin rock ledges (pic #2)...bringing to mind the scripture: "He makes my feet like hinds' feet and sets me on my high places.*" Coney families scampered in and out of small caves, looking much like beavers to me, but minus their wide tails (pic #3). Some posed so still, one might even assume they were a facsimile and not real creatures. We passed by small trickles in the stream, then...

The Holocaust Museum/Yad VaShem

by VeronicaG

Most likely the largest memorial of its sort, the Holocaust museum complex is quite impressive and painfully touching. Videos, letters, oral history, photographs all chronicle the tragedy--how anyone can deny what happened is beyond belief. The Hall of Names makes sure you do not forget. I believe everyone who visits Israel must make it a point to see this museum. The Children's Memorial was a beautiful attempt to assure that the children's plight will never be forgotten either (pic #2). Architecturally unassuming from the outside, the memorial grabs at your heart and will not let it go as you wander through a darkened pathway, punctuated by points of light meant to represent the lives of children lost. The Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations pays tribute to the courageous Gentiles who helped to save the Jewish people, some of these men and women perished doing so. It contains...

The Jordan River - Yardenit

by magor65

I think it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the Jordan river is the most famous, or at least the most unique river in the world. What is so unusual about it?Firstly, geographical aspect. The river flows in almost all its course below the level of the sea, finally reaching the Dead Sea whose surface is 400 metres below the sea level.Jordan is mentioned a lot of times in the Bible. The most significant event probably took place somewhere near Jericho where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.Nowadays there is a baptismal site in Yardenit. After paying a few dollars you get a white robe, step into the waters of Jordan and get baptised (by immersion), which is confirmed by a special certificate. I didn't take advantage of this opportunity, but some people from our group did. Naturally, it shouldn't be treated as another touristic attraction. If someone feels the need to confirm or...

Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv

by Paul2001

The Eretz Israel Museum Complex was one of the more interesting museums that I visited in Israel. The museum is refered to as a complex because it is spread out in several pavilions over and around a centuries old tel. Each of the pavilions is features either an archeologiocal period involving the digs in the tel or another cultural aspect of the times such as craftsmen ship. There are also pavilions centering on socialogical aspects of Israeli society. There are ten pavilions in all. These pavilions are obviously not for everyone and I for one did not visit all them. For me the most interesting exhibit in the museum complex was not the pavilions but rather the tel itself and the archeological dig that can be visited. It dates from Canaanite times and is label so you can get a good idea about life during these times. The museum complex is near to the extraordinary Bet Hatfutzot museum on...
