Renting A Car

by RhineRoll

Discovering Israel by rental car is an excellent thing to do for all individualists who like to create their own itinerary. The road network is quite good and while driving standards are not exactly on par with British courtesy, with the necessary defensive driving style you won't have too many problems. I've driven in places like Rome and Naples and Israel was much better in comparison. Overland driving is quite relaxing I thought, it seems to be mostly in dense city traffic where a certain impulsiveness and impatience leads to dangerous situations, and the impossible parking situation certainly doesn't help. Don't book a rental car when exploring Israel's cities, especially Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. It would be a big waste of time and money. All major rental companies are present in Israel, plus Eldan, the major local player. Eldan also rents out wheelchair accessible cars with hand...

Public transport on the weekends

by gezergirl

Sunday is a weekday in Israel. The weekend is Fri-Sat. Public transportation halts on Fri. afternoon (around 4 p.m. during winter months, 5-6 in the summertime) and resumes on Sat early evening (5-6).Taxis and Sherut taxis (minivans that operate intercity routes) operate 7 days a week, most of them around the clock. The only day of the year in which there's no form of transport whatsoever is Yom Kippur (atonement day, around Sept-Oct, depending on the Jewish calendar), the holliest day of the year. On that day, even private cars don't run.

Tourist Driver License Requirements in Israel

by navic99

Ok....well the debate here made me do some more research and I found this.http://www.koshertravelinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98http://www.aaci.org.il/ak/ak3_2.htm"New immigrants, temporary residents and returning residents are permitted to drive in Israel with their foreign or international driver's license for one year following their date of entry into Israel. The category of vehicle driven must match the category stated on the valid license and the age requirement must comply with the Israeli requirements for that category"It sounds like a foreign license is good for one year in Israel with full insurance coverage.

Car Rental

by mandarindli

I strongly recommend you to travel by a rented car in Israel. It is so cheap, 40$ a day is what I paid at Shlomo Sixt (April 2008; smallest category; 5 doors; new car with only 200km). Plus I have to say that I spent very little for the petrol. I made 1300km approximately and did not pay much more than $100 for the petrol! It is much cooler to travel by a rented car in Israel since you are so much more flexible - I am an experienced traveller in Israel and must say, that I enjoyed this trip the most when it comes to transportation.Be prepared for an automatic car even if you book a manual one! At Sixt they do offer manual cars when you book online but in fact they only have two cars which are manual - at least I was told so. As an unexperienced driver when it comes to automatic cars, Sixt gave me a nice introduction: someone came with me for the first 5km and we drove from Ben Gurion to...

Rental car in Israel

I reserved a small car through Budget rent-a-car's (budget.com) website for pickup at the Tel Aviv airport. The cost in May of 2006 was a ridiculously low $12 per day plus taxes and fees. No problems whatsoever. My creditcard company provided free insurance to me. The total rental for 11 days was about $200.00 US.Ken

Driving

by NYTim

Your best bet -- as one who has done this a few times -- is to drive to Jerusalem, then take Route 1 to the Dead sea Ein Gedi etc. The northern tip of the Dead sea is a 45 minute drive from Jerusalem. Ein Gedi and Massada may be another 1/2 hour or so.From the Galilee head to the coast and drive south you will have no problems except for the Israeli drivers who seem to be blind and drunk most of the time.
