How long will it take?

by DovoftheGalilee

In my other tip on Egged buses through out Israel I mentioned what an exceptional job they do but I have to balance this with the service is far better if you're a Hebrew speaker. Many out of the way places can be reached using the buses and knowing which ones to get where is a trick. There's no problem if your going from Tel Aviv to Eilat or Jerusalem to Safed but if you want to go to some kibbutz in the Golan than you better have it in writing to show the driver and even then you're counting on him remembering where you want to go. So if you plan to go off the beaten path with Egged have your desires written by someone in Hebrew.Second sit to the front of the bus so that you can easily remind the driver you're depending on him!Third is allocating the required time to stand around and wait for the connecting bus. There is likely no bathrooms or amenities to speak of so have water and...

EGGED- National Bus Carrier

by DovoftheGalilee

Pronounced Egg - Ed this bus line which runs the full length of the country does a splendid job for an affordable price. As an example you can purchase a ticket from Jerusalem to Tiberias with return included for the sum of NIS 71.40. The company offers a user friendly online bus schedule in English complete with prices.** Often the bus driver will ask if you want a return ticket and this is advisable provided you are returning from where you're setting out from. What this means to you is a slight savings of several shekels on the over all cost of the round trip.** The Hebrew word for return is 'hazor' if you forget this make a circling motion with your fingers and the idea should be understood.

Ben-Gurion Airport - the very first impression

by markrabinovich

This new terminal of the Ben Gurion airport (terminal 3) was enagurated in 2003. Well, we already have peeks during summer months, but the building still looks nice and a bit unusual. When you first enter the country from through the customs hall into the reception hall, just stop for a moment and make a look onto the ceiling of the reception hall. May your very first impression be nice?

Must Rent a GPS

by toby24

It is a great idea to rent a GPS unit when you rent a car. It makes life so much easier. Navigating Israel can be nearly impossible. You can rent a GPS from a company called GPS express. They are located at the airport and at the Eldan office on King David street in Jerusalem. I think they charge $12 a day. Well worth it. When i rented one, i had a problem with the unit at 11:30pm and i talked to a an english speaker who helped me with the problem.

Beware - road signs

by markrabinovich

Road signs on Israeli roads always duplicate local names in English. However, we do not have any strict rule of spelling of Hebrew names in Latin. so that another name is just a private invention of another authority. Example: the town of Caesarea (the common spelling) may appear as something like Ceisariyya, while Tiberias may be written as either Tweria or Tiberiyya or whatever. Municipal signs (yet another authority involved) usualy vary from road signs. Street names are a real disaster sometimes: you can see something like “Rehov Haprofessor Waizman” which just means “Prof. Weizman street”.My fellow tourists, do not vary too much - you will servive easily. Just stop redaing signs and ask any local guy. Most of young guys here are fluent in English.

From Israel To Cairo

by Sharon

This questions is frequently asked here since many people combine the (at least) two countries at same trip.So for the time being there is NO DIRECT bus or train from Israel to Cairo and v/v.The options to cross the borders and get to Cairo are those:1. Book a flight from Tel Aviv to Cairo2. Take a bus or a fligh to Eilat at the south, At Eilat take a taxi or bus to the Egyptian Border and Take a bus in Taba to Cairo but this point should be check since im not sure if the bust leaves from Taba or Nuweiba.3. You can cross the JORDANIAN border, take a taxi to Aqaba and there take a ferry to Sharm El sheikh and from there a bus or maybe even a flight to Cairo, However this option should be checked well, and besides, i think its a bit too complicated and should be a good option only if you want to go to sharm el sheikh.VISA: Unlike when visiting sinay, when leaving sinay and going inland...

Travel Light

by gabriellefox

When you are taking a day trip out of Egypt into Israel it is important to remember to have your passport and visas with you. Travel light as buses and cars are not allowed across the border and you have to take a walk across no mans land before you reach the Israel border guards. Listen carefully as they may try and trick you by looking at your passport and offering up a different name, they may ask how many people are in your party and what is the nature of your relationship with fellow travellers. Do not use your camera at or between thes check points as your equipment may be confiscated.

Questionnaires at the Airport

by Childish

Unfortunately this has become my fondest memory of Israel.I travelled with a group visa for the first time in my life. There won't be a visa for Bulgarians in the near future, we were the last ones asked for a visa, but as an compensation it was free of charge. So, we entry the country with no problems. Even our luggage wasn't checked at arrival which is odd nowadays. But the things with the departure were completely different!! We were at the airport 3 hours before the flight warned that there are extra luggage checks. Being a part of a group of mostly of elderly people, I left behind, to assist them in case they need some help. Maybe this was my mistake. Even before check-in I was a subject of a half-hour examination answering almost the same questions over and over again to one guy, to his boss, then again, and again, and again. I looked very suspicious indeed with my stamps and visas...
