Rakevet (train)

by Nathalie_B

Israeli trains are clean, fast, affordable, and reliabale. I know I make it sound almost perfect, but except for some occasional delays and even accidents, which could happen in any country, riding our trains is a really pleasant experience. Especially I recommend using this service getting from the airport to Tel Aviv. For about $3 you will get to the city in just 12 minutes! All the routes can be found on the train stations and they are written in both languages Hebrew and English. Tickets can be purchased from either a ticket booth or a vending machine which accepts both, cash and credit cards. The trains are not running 24/7 and I would suggest you to check the schedule before you hit the road. Remember that no public transport is running in Israel from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. Check the Website before you start your journey. And please remember to keep your ticket until the...

Recommended Tour Company

by Martin_S.

Just a note, this tour company is one of the oldest in Israel and I have had it recommended by people who work in the business. Their web site has an interactive map of Israel where you can just put your mouse marker over the spot and it will bring up a page giving you a short idea of the tour and its cost in US$.

Baggage Juggling

by gilabrand

If you are flying in or out of Israel, new baggage restrictions have gone into effect since January 1, 2006. Economy class passengers are limited to 23 kilograms (about 50 lbs.) per suitcase, as opposed to 32 kilograms until now. Each passenger is allowed two pieces of checked baggage and one carry-on bag. In addition to the carry-on, you can bring one “personal item,” defined as a male/female purse, a briefcase, a camera case or a diaper bag. All are subject to a security check. If you put your bags on the scale and you hear those bloodcurdling words “You’re overweight,” don’t get flustered yet. There is still a chance of getting your belongings on the plane without paying a huge sum of money. What the airline clerk behind the counter forgets to tell you is that you can juggle between your bags. If you have two, and one of them is less than 23 kilos, open the other one, select a few...

Skip the fast paced tours, take the bus

by MossCanoe

I spoke to many tourists who envied my freedom because they had purchased tours that whipped them through 15 hour days. They were exhausted and couldn't even recite what they had seen! Ridiculous. I arrived with no agenda, and money for the buses. I figured it out and poseyed as I wanted to. I took my laptop and emailed ahead for bed and breakfasts. I found many cheap off season places. I also avoided all hostels. In hostels you meet other travelers, but not locals. In TA, the hostels were full of rough characters from out of town who wanted the cheap price.

Taxi

by nnaha

It's very sheep to take the taxi in israel. If you find the right taxidriver, it's like a goldmine. You can be driven all around the contry for a whole day to the greatest price. Obs!If you think the price is to high, tell the driver to put on the counter.. otherwise, you can be swindled. The pic is from a trip to the Golan Highs, with taxi :)

Egged - the Israeli Busline

by travellingdan

The green busses of EGGED are the most conveniant form of transportation around Israel and to some border crossings if you can't spend the big buck. The Jerusalem - Tel Aviv - Arlozorov Line: no. 480 for example leaves every 15 minutes and costs 17.70 NIS.From Jerusalem to EnGedi (Bus no. 486) costs 32NIS oneway. For longer distances or high frequence times or routes buy your ticket (and the seat reservation) in advance! Otherwise you might stand the whole way in the aisle crammed between soldiers with their guns and loud schoolkids.

Travelling between Israel/Palestine and Jordan

by travellingdan

If you want to travel between Israel/Palestine and Jordan and you don't want to fly between the two international airports Ben Gurion in Tel Aviv and the one in Amman, you can go by bus and taxi. Then you have the choice between three different border crossings: - The one in the north, which is called Sheikh Hussein (in Jordan) / Jordan River crossing (in Israel), - the one in the middle, which is the famous King Hussein / Allenby Bridge crossing or - the one in the south which is called Arabah / Arava border crossing. The Allenby crossing seems to be the most convenient on the first look because it is more or less on the direct line Tel Aviv - Jerusalem - Amman. But watch out: It is therefore the most crowded crossing and if you are not going there pretty early you will take the risk of not beeing able to cross before they close the crossing (yes, they have opening hours). And for...

El Al Pre-Check-In

by travellingdan

El Al is offering a Pre-Check-In-Service at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport. They say: You can go through the security questioning and check-in your flight luggage easily a day or more before your flight leaves. But if you don't have an Israeli Passport it is not worth it! I went there and after the security questioning they labeled me "red" (high risk) for no reason and refused to check in my luggage. I had to go to the check-in before my flight left and they hand-checked all my luggage and me - what took roundabout three hours. The money that I paid for the Pre-Check-In the day before I never got back. The actually very nice Security guy at the airport recommended not to fly El Al at all to avoid such trouble.
