Pickpockets in big cities in Israel

by ophiro

On big cities in the world like new york , rome , prague , paris and more you will find a lot of warning about pickpockets but here in Israel it is very safe.I am not saying that you can leave your stuff on a desk and leave it but still tel aviv is much safer than other big cities.Always be careful but feel free and relax.

Diamond Center in Ramat Gan - when night falls

by ophiro

In the evening and during the night in the Diamond Center in Ramat Gan (or the BURSA as people here call this location) there are a lot of peep shows , street hookers so be careful if you decide for some weird reason to walk there (Although no one will kill you and there is a police activity there).Be careful - that's all.

Dessert

by slometa

Don't overestimate dessert. The paths are though marked, but it's endless network of paths which continues from one to another and the hike can be endless. There's no signs where it goes. So a good map and some information in advance are necessary, unless you want to get some work for a rescue team :) . Stay on the marked path and take mobile phone and camera with you, you never know. Technology helps :)Talking from my own experiences, but the reason why I ended up somewhere in the dessert is a much longer story...

Hitchhiking

by freya_heaven

Now you may think any one who hitchhikes is asking for trouble, but in Israel its is still quite a common thing to do.Other single female friends of mine used to hitchhike to local towns etc from the kibbutz of a regular basis alone & none had any problems. I tried it 3 times & two of them I only just got my self out of trouble. The second this happened was the final straw, I nice older man had picked me up seemed very respectable & chatty. Just before we got to Tiberias he veered off the road in to some sort of plantation when he finally stopped the car it was obvious what he was expecting.........................Dont think I have ever been so angry or ran so fast! Its an excellent & cheap way of getting around, but make sure you do ONLY hitchkike with a friend.

Charging dollars instead of Shekels

by icepick2000

When you buy something in Jerusalem in one of the tourist shops (I bought a t shirt) and you pay by credit card, make sure the currency on the bill you sign is in Shekels, instead of USD.. otherwise that nice t-shirt will turn out pretty expensive.

Relax.

by Salek

That's the best I can reccomend. Life is dangerous. It's still more dangerous to live in the Bronx than it is in Jerusalem. If you pass up a trip to Israel becuase you think it's safer to stay home, you're cheating yourself of an amaziing experience.Oddly enough - and nobody has ever explained to me why this is - Israel doesn't have serial killers, pederasts, or rapists, to the degree that many western countries do. So you will see even in the largest cities (Tel Aviv) 9-year olds walking to school alone, doors open, kids playing in the street. It's a lot like America was in the 60's. Yes, crime exists, but the 'criminal' is a completely different kind of person here, and their reasons are completely different. I am a woman, and I never ever felt uncomfortable walking alone at night, at any hour, in any city or town I travelled in.

Israeli Customs and Immigration

by jadedmuse

Rest assured that Israeli Customs and Immigration are busy doing what they can to PREVENT danger. You'll find a lot of Israeli women working in Customs & Immigration - Israeli women are known for being direct, to the point, and very assertive. They're extremely effective in this capacity! (Some first time visitors bristle at what they perceive to be less than polite verbal treatment by Israeli Customs & Immigration. No kid gloves here, folks!) Don't let yourself feel intimidated by Israeli Customs & Immigration. They are doing their job and protecting you - and the State - in the process. It pays to be prepared to answer the same question several times, often just re-positioned and re-phrased. You may even have several different officials asking the same questions - patience and cooperation will get you through.Think of it as another facet of your adventure!

Women, be careful in the cities

by Faracy

I can´t emphazise this enough. I was not looking for attention, and I think I was dressed quite modestly... I´m not used to being physically grabbed, and really publicly molested... I had men grab my arms, and try to take me with them, and grab my legs while I was swimming.. I heard the line (I´m a masseur) countless times... Yeah right!Does that EVER work... the same applies to men who are selling things and when you refuse then ask if you want sex! NO!!!!!NEVER!!! I was also asked to (come back to my room, just for one hour) more than once.I was a single female traveling by myself. This is just something you will have to deal with, and ignore the best way possible.I was called many lewd names, and cat called.. its best to just keep moving... they don´t know any better, and you trying to straighten them out isn´t worth YOUR time. There are wonderful men in Israel too... of course. They...

Beware of hitchhiking !!!

by KettyDK

I don't wanna sound melodramatic or hysteric , but the bitter truth must be said :DO NOT , UNDER ANY CONDITIONS , TRAVEL AROUND BY HITCHHIKING , ESPECIALLY NOT WHILE YOU TRAVEL BY YOURSELF !!! This is absolutely serious . There have been enough of well-known , "loud" cases of people who payed with their life after getting into a car with a stranger . Just think carefully : can you actually be sure that the sweet , polite and the smiling driver IS such a nice person in reality ? The answer is NO . This person can , of course , be a nice and a sweet person who would drive you for free to your desired destination , but there is always a risk that you would get into a car of a terrorist , rapist , or just a maniac who would kill you for no reason . Do you really want to risk your life ? I seriously think it's much better to spend some extra money and to go safely in public transportation...

Anywhere : naughty local men and guys

by KettyDK

This is actual for girls and women :Everytime you go out , don't be surprised to get plenty and plenty of attention from local men ! This "attention" is very various : long and shameless staring at you and your body , whistles , head-turning ... This might be compliment for some , but for others , it's simpy harrassing .Do not take those things too personally . That's just the way these men behave . They don't really want to harm you or do anything against your will :-)But somehow , it can go slightly further than these innocent signs of attention : in crowded places ( markets , nightclubs , for example ) some of these guys can "take their opportinity" and move from just watching to ... touching ! In this case - stay away from the harrasser , or even better : don't hesitate to smack him ! But these cases , fortunately , are not so common , so most of the chances are , that you wouldn't...
