Going to Israel

by kevarms

Be prepared: you will be asked a lot of questions at your departure airport, especially if you are not Jewish, and even more so if it's also your first time to Israel. Stay calm, polite and give honest answers. The security people will be polite too - and remember, they are just doing their job protecting you and me. They aren't trying to trick you into confessing you are a terrorist. I've only ever flown with Israeli airlines, but I would guess - hope even - that security is no less strict on others.

Watch out for "flash" floods in desert

by Martin_S.

Caught this flash flood just as it was building. You can see the sky over this point is cloudy, but there was sun and NO RAIN at the point where I took the picture. Because of the type of soil here, the rain was actually falling about 20 miles away and was running on the surface of the soil, causing a flood to procede down this previously dry riverbed. If you are in a narrow spot in a canyon where you cannot climb out you may be caught in the flood. Our rescue team have had the dubious opportunity to pull bodies out of the flood over 20 kilometers from where they were swept away, so YOU be careful, know what the weather is.

Lions and tigers and bears..and scorpions?

by angelis

When living rough in a valley on the outskirts of Jerusalem, I leant back against the wall and nearly put my hand on a scorpion. It was a huge black thing and only a slight movement out of the corner of my eye alerted me to its presence. Although I did feel rather sorry for it a few moments later, after it met with my friends size 13 trainer!Although I am told this is rare outside the desert areas, If you do hike, camp or decide to rough it in Israel, wear thick socks and stout boots to protect your legs from snakes and scorpions. Always shake boots, clothing and sleeping bags out before putting them on/ climbing into them, and be wary of small, dark holes. If you are with children be extra vigilant to stop them poking hands or sticks into crevices. These scorpions are not deadly, but they sting is supposed to be extremely PAINFUL.

Jerusalem Old City / The Jewish Quarter.

by Grazina

Heavily destroyed between 1949 and 1967, the Jewish Quarter came to life again after the Six Day War (June, 1967). During its reconstruction, parts of ancient Jerusalem surfaced for the first time in thousands of years Okay, but on the Arab Quarter a little different. The markets of the Old City of Jerusalem reveal the time-honored trading customs of the Near East. The "shuk" is filled with the pungent smell of spices and resonant calls of street vendors. With market boasts a fantastic variety of goods made in brass or ceramics, and a colorful cast of character hawking their wares, now the word Character is the warning...for a lone woman to venture into these market place, don't be to surprise if someone pinches you or touch you in areas that are only for your husband to touch, and don't go alone into a shop where a shop keeper will ask you to come and see nicer things way in the back...

If you visit Israel in summer...

by maxovna

If you visit Israel in summer (July, August) and explore the country, drink more water. Otherwise you will be exhausted by the heat and may feel not well. In organized tours our guides checked the availability of a bottle with water before getting in a bus.

We drove around in the Golan...

by Elmsaafir

We drove around in the Golan Heights for a while during my last trip there. The weather was misty up that high, and around every turn, it seemed, was another relic of the countless wars that have raged there. Passed some tanks on patrol, and we turned around, and drove back to take some pictures. We then turned around to pass them again, going the original direction. We sort of expected a main gun round to come crashing into us, but fortunately that didn't happen. But, there's nothing like holding the wheel as the driver snaps pics.

Where does one start...When I...

by Elmsaafir

Where does one start...When I was there in 94, it was quite calm. There were only a few bombings during that year, and relations with Jordan were normalized. It's like a completely different place now...daily bombings, Israeli incursions in response, massive destruction, a health care nightmare in Gaza and the West Bank...the list goes on. Basically, stay away right now.

Now it is dangerous to visit...

by CLOUD282

Now it is dangerous to visit anywhere in Israel. If you still want to go, good luck :-) And if possible, don't take the bus route to cross the bounder from Gaza to Egypt unless your bus is under the protection of police force or army.
