When you drive at night, there is certainthings you should be aware of. It's notonly lost settlers, weirdo priests and rabbai'sor even some running muslims. Nope, it's infact the wild life. My friend Thomas and mecommited a hit and run one night - hitting an owl...I tried to get it perserved someway andput it in my office as a trophy, but aftersome month's in the office freezer, the fatalpowercut started a process that brought the owlsomehow to life (began to stink...and I had to dump it - tragic story:-()

Eliat - don't sleep on the beach, we were trying to save some money before our trip to Egypt and had done this before but my 'bum' bag was cut from my waist while I slept and it was not a good experience waking up with someone stealing all your worldly goods, not alot for all that effort, I got on with it and was lucky enough to have no problems with travelling on to Egypt after this!

When you are in Eilat you will see soldiers with guns, You will be searched every time you go into any Mall. You will spend a long time going through the customs, but after a couple of days it becomes normal. When you see how close Egypt and Jordan is you get a better feel for the geographics of the area. The soldiers with the guns all look like young teenagers, maybe it's me getting older !

Listen...lots of crazy stuff happens in Israel. But you can't let that stop you from living. Or travelling. Be SMART. If the hair on the back of your neck stands up, bail out. If you think something looks fishy, don't be afraid to report it. But please, don't stay at home.

by ikohavi

The political situation in Israel is difficult which makes te whole trip a little dangerous. Hitchhike in Israel is out of the question. Don't try to save money, just take public transportation or even rent a car (the safest). Watch out not to go to places that are known as dangerous (because it's no joke - people died in these places). Drive with maps, knowing where you are all the time. But... don't forget to enjoy!

Is it dangerous? Sure... I didn't feel as though I was in danger; however, I'm sure I probably was... you have a tendancy not to be frightened when you see soldiers (who are the good guys - there to protect you and the country) walking around everywhere.

It's dangerous now - it really is. But not everwhere in the country. I just edited this tip so that travelers leaving Israel would be advised that security at the Tel Aviv airport is now so difficult for any travelers with Arab names or who seem suspicious (i.e. not Israelis) that you MUST plan on lots of extra time. Now, they will remove all electrical items from your suitcase - hairdryer, laptop, etc. If you have anything unusual with you -- even a CD player or a VCR - you might not get it back in time for your flight. Mine was returned by mail -- broken. Also, they take every single item out of your suitcases. Ask if YOU can repack. What they took from me was a piece of gold jewelery that was one of my engagement tokens, because it is decorated with a surah from the Quran. It was not returned -- it's just gone. DO bring official letters to explain what you were doing in Israel because...

I should let you know that my camera broke on the second day there. This camera has been with me for years and usually takes incredible pictures (see Europe pics), but at the Sea of Galilee, it just died completely. The only thing I can think of was that it couldn't take the heat. It's still broken, and I had to buy disposable cameras (which I think cost 21 sheckles). My advice would be to be carful with your camera - maybe take a cheap one - because the temperature is amazingly hot!! Perhaps my new digital one could handle it now.

Don't worry, they're not loaded...I think. At least they let me hold one for a while & I was careful not to pull the trigger. This is what the Israeli soldiers do when they want to go in the ocean...pile their guns up together.
