In general, dangers depend on...

by Tamuz

In general, dangers depend on the political atmosphere and are usually exaggerated. During high tension periods (read a paper, or watch CNN), there are specific areas that should be avoided. Most of the violence over the past few years has been in the West Bank and Gaza. In Israel proper, it is usually quite, although lately there have been some attacks in city centers. I wouldn't hang out too much in the center of Jerusalem (Ben-Yehuda St.), since that tends to be a target for terrorists. On the other hand, 99.99% of the time, it's quite, peaceful and crawling with police. In general, Israel is not as dangerous as it's made out to be. Drive by shootings are still more common in Los Angeles.

by Goner

No danger going into Bethlehem. The bus we were in stopped at the border before visiting Palestine, but only to speak briefly with our our Israeli tour guide. The picture is of a very handsome Palestinian guard and our 86-year-old passenger.

by DV8-SPY

Just be aware that it is one of the most politically and religiously corrupt countries n the world. There you have Christianity, Judaism, Orthodoxes, muslims all 'trying' to live in perfect harmony.Their goal is to make there religion and beliefs superior to others. Just beaware of there positions. Respect it, and speak no louder that a whisper when voicing your opinions.Don't smoke at the sight.

Never never leave a bag...

by B_Lacombe

Never never leave a bag unattended. Not only can it be exploded by the bomb squad but you may go to jail for that. The other way is the same: If you see a bag by it-self, don't get nearby and report it to authorities, they will know how to handle it. Remember there is a constant state of war. The customs are also very agressive, don't take it personnaly if you are treated like a criminal, everyone has the same unpleasant treatment.

by Judith44

The driving in Israel is insane. If you drive have nerves of steel. There is no easy place to park in Tel Aviv and I've never found a place to park in Safed.Check with locals about the current situation and dangers. I have driven many places you shouldn't but I wouldn't right now. (July 2001)

by SueRivet

In general, it is unwise for foreigners to visit border areas with Lebanon and Syria. There are still signs warning of mines in some of the fields. Also, even during non-crisis times there have been sporadic exchanges of artillery; don't get caught in the middle of it.

by jdak

Fanatacism exists in both the Israeli and Palestinian communities....steer clear of towns, villages, and settlements known for extremism. For any Palestinian you'll meet under the age of 30, all s/he has known is the Israeli occupation --- for many of the extreme right Israelis, the belief is that God gave them the right to settle in what they call their biblical homeland...both sides are armed and you don't want to be in the middle.

In Jerusalem's Arab Quarter,...

by Martin_S.

In Jerusalem's Arab Quarter, women who are alone should be wary of going into the little shops. If you are alone, only go into those shops where there are several tourists or even a group. If they leave, leave with them. If you are with a friend, one of you should stay outside while the other looks around. There are very seldom any problems, but why take chances when they are easily avoided.

by Martin_S.

Look out for religious fanatics, either Jew or Moslem. If you happen into one of their living areas in what they consider inappropriate dress you do have a chance of being spit upon, cursed or even in a worse case stoned (not smoking marijuana, actually having yourself attacked by men throwing stones at you). The worst is in Mea Shariem in Jerusalem which is an enclave of religious fanatics. It is interesting to walk through and glimpse their lifestyle, but wear appropriate clothing and women should avoid speaking or touching men. Do not hold hands or make a direct approach to a stranger. If there are only women in your group avoid contact with all the men in black hats and coats.
