Nothing like it: Thank you for SMOKING...
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is nothing really special for foreingers because most of their porducts are imported from overseas, for the most part of the shop. In this way, the shop is set up for local...
Besides the decorations displayed in the shop, they also sell Cigars. They sell a series of local-made cigar, I cannot remember all of their names, but I bought "Petra" from the shop.
The shop is running by a 28-year-old Australian-Jordanian, which means it's not a problems if you only speak English. He know his Cigars so well that he can even give you a lesson of Cigars. He is also friendly so before you leave Jordan, give yourself a good final memory!!

Well in this shop, I would suggest you buy some local-made cigars. The one " Petra" and its fellow, you can only get this series in this shop!! So it's quiet worth paying a visit here if you like cigars.

For each cigars, the price range from JD2 to JD20 plus plus. It all depends on how many you want to buy.

Jordan River Foundation Shop: Beautiful handicraft
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Jordan River Foundation shop is a wonderful showcase of traditional handicraft, much of it in a very modern guise, and all of the very highest quality. All the items on sale are made by village women working in a variety of programmes that encourage and empower village women and their families by providing employment and fostering entrpreneurship that benefits vulnerable communities and is an agent for the most positive change.

Lovely embroidery and applique work on cushions, tablecloths, bedspreads and a host of smaller items, dolls, mosaics, soaps, baskets -there really is something for everyone here.

Anything from just a couple of dollars and up

Fruit and vegetable souk: Fresh fruit

  • Loquats, green plums and chickpeas - Amman
    Loquats, green plums and
    chickpeas

A wander through the fruit and vegetable souk in Amman is very satisying to the senses - it will fill your eyes with colour, your nose with the wonderful smell of fresh produce and your ears with the sounds of a busy market place. You'll be invited to try, even if you're not going to buy. In spring there are fresh chickpeas - green and floury, quite unlike the dried ones you're probably used to; little green sour plums -an acquired taste; loquats - the only way to eat these is when they are picked ripe as they have been here. Other seasons will bring other treats.

  • Sorry, I don't really know how to place this tip. So I type it onder this category!!

There are many Airlines' office in King Al-Hussein St, including KLM, Middle East Airlines (Lebanon), Iberia( Spain ) and Egypt Air and many travel agencies. If you want to book a trip to other countries nearby, just come to this street. It locates in downtown Amman.

Air ticket and a trip to...
And most of the travel agencies here accept credit cards, so it's also convenient!!

Shops in the souq: Amman's souq
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't expect to find a souq like in Istanbul or Marrakesh. Apart from being an "open air" souq (with no roofs or buildings holding it), Amman's souq is not really a place for tourists to buy things. It is more a place for locals, with cheap prices, with food shops, barber shops, groceries, butchers', cheap clothing shops etc ... you might find some shops with handicraft or souvenirs for tourists, but just a very very few. But, be sure that prices here are much lower than in any other touristc place in Jordan. As low as 4 or 5 times the price you would be asked for if you buy anything in a shop near a touristic site.

However, it's an interesting place, and spending a while walking around Amman's souq won't be a waste of time.

The souq is located downtown, near the Roman Theatre and King Hussein Mosque.

Cheap clothes, food, vegetables, kitchen tools, handicrafts

    hand painted ostrich eggs
  • Tip Rating:
  • it's a local arts and craft shop sponsored by Save the Children. All the proceeds go to the women who produce the items

hand painted ostrich eggs - the designs vary - but for them the artists use the mosaic technique (little dots instead of brush strokes). Most designs are inspired by Jordanian mosaics

over 100 JD, expensive but worth it

    Mecca Mall: A regular mall

  • Far from the popular center, this is a modern eastern mall where you can find everything from fashion clothes to local souvenirs or artwork.
This is cold and you could definitely regreat the lack of soul but at least no bargaining here, you know you are paying a correct price for the quality you expect...

Probably controversial subject, I know some people prefer to go to the souk, this is just a suggested alternative for the ones who don't like it...

For example a friend bought some jewelry in the center, he discussed a lot, got a price at the end but even now, he still doesn't know if he has paid a honnest price or has been fooled...

    Spice things up a bit
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a number of herb and spice shops scattered around Jordan. You can always tell when you are near one from the marvellous aromas drifting outward.

Don't miss having a look inside at least one of them, you will probably find yourself buying something from the sheer fascination of it.

    Music Box: Buying cds
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want to buy cds in Amman, mind that most of the shops downtown, specially those in the souk, sell only home made copied cds. When asking for original cds, shop owners looked suprised and insisted in selling a copy telling that the quality is the same and the price is much lower. However, I didn't want to buy any copy, but some original jordanian pop cds. So I was told to go to Music Box shop at Mecca Mall shopping center. And yeah ... there I found a shop with original cds to buy. 4 brand new jordanian cds recently released for 24 dinars. Not bad.

Cds, Jordanian and Arabic music, International music.
