When you take taxi drivers make sure the meter is ON or have fixed price,
I took a taxi at after mid-night and the driver claimed that at night the meters are not used.and the price he asked for was very high.
I told a local about this he said If in any case you feel that the taxi driver is cheating you or giving you hard time just ask for the police and he will be like a pod in your hands...
I did the same in Istanbul they are scared for the police and because they may lose their job..

Unique Suggestions: be assertive, blackmail by police,be confident

Not a tourist trap per se, but be aware that there are other alternatives to renting a car from Petra Moon Travel Agency in Amman Jordan. Some cabbies are work for hotels as cabs for hire. It is much less expensive to hire a cab for the day than a "private" car with driver. Ask you hotel to get in touch with their personnel.

Fun Alternatives: see above.

Official Cabs-Amman

In Amman cab drivers asks you more money than the taximeter shows. They try to not switch it on. If they dont switch it on, point at taximeter.

BTW always get the green labelled cabs. These are the official and secure cabs. (shown by photo)

Unique Suggestions: In Amman 4JD is OK for distances. Do not pay more than 4 JD.

Fun Alternatives: Just give 4 JD and leave the cab. Thats all...

Beware of Taxi Tricks

We took two separate taxi rides over a two day period. In both cases, they worked hard to take us for a ride. They are at leasat as creative of LA hustlers or taxi drivers in Rio. There are no meters and they have all the tricks. Where is Rudy Juliani and his quality of life campaign for Amman?

When you attempt to negotiate a fare, their English fails. At the end of the ride they quote a price and then want a tip claiming they have to turn the entire price into their taxi company. Since they do not report in or otherwise keep track of the trip, that is a total ruse. They only take cash, but US currency is OK. The buses take only local currency.

Fun Alternatives: Attempt to get an Arabic speaker to negotiate a taxi fare, but that will be difficult in the hub-bub of the airport.

If taking a taxi to the shops, set a price before you leave. Most taxi drivers will wait while you shop. We used the same taxi driver everyday. We organised him to pick us up from the hotel for our daily attractions and take us to the airport. Most will discuss prices with you.

Watch out!

Okay... you have to always watch out for things such as filling up petrol. Always get out of the car, or at least keep your eye on the petrol pump indicators. Sometimes they aren't started at zero dinars (the currency there). They might start it off at about 2 dinars and you will have to pay the extra money.

Always check the price of everything you buy and then compare it to the bill. You can never be too sure

Taxi Drivers, non-yellow, without meters

These guys will spot tourists and offer you a low flat fee. I had all my bags with me from abdali bus station.
After we agreed on the price , he travelled for about 2 kilometers then he quadripelled the price. When i refused , he stop the taxi on a busy road and said he can't continue .
We eventually negotiated a lower price but not the initial one)).
I was very angry

Unique Suggestions: You can get out anywhere with your bags , I didn't realise this at the time.
Its a very safe town

Fun Alternatives: Use the yellow taxis with Meters.
Ensure the driver resets it , it should read 0.150 dinar when you get in.

Its a usual custom for owners of shops to offer you coffee whilst you shop. It's seen as being rude if you refuse.
