Petra more then just the Treasury

by FireMike

Well it was all about Petra but before going I thought Petra was all about The Treasury, the temple at the end of the canyon. In fact, Petra is huge with about 60 different temples or buildings carved into the cliff walls.

Aqaba - Duty free heaven

by ElizabethSmith

The people in Jordan are extremely friendly. I have travelled to the middle east/north africa many times but the Jordanians are really the nicest people around. There is none of the pushiness you sometimes get in shops in Egypt, the people are honest (I left a load of clothes in my hotel and they were sent to me in England). Wadi Rum is magic. The massive crags, sugar soft sand, with eagles soaring above in silent flight was an experience I will never forget. I'll be back...

Mosaics

by MalenaN

Mosaics from the Byzantine era can be found at several places in Jordan (mostly around Madaba). These are fine works of art and it must have taken years to finish the larger ones. The mosaics were made for the floor and can be found in churches and at what used to be important buildings. The mosaics often showes people, animals and plants and things like hunting and winemaking. There are also religous and mythological subjects. The mosaic on this picture is the Siyagha mosaic which can be seen in the Moses Memorial Church at Mt Nebo. It is about 9 m x 3 m big.

Sleeping in the desert

by MalenaN

I can really recomend everybody to stay over the night in the desert in Wadi Rum. Don't sleep inside a tent but sleep outside, under the stars. It's absolutly breathtaking! When I was going to sleep in Wadi Rum the moon was shining and there was soooo many stars. In the middle of the night when I waked up the moon was gone and there were milions and milions of stars. And as a white band over the sky you could see the Milky Way. I will never forgett this!

Amman

This is the last shot that I have of Amman! My pictures are not that exciting but I thought I would share what I have. I would love to return to Jordan some day as it looks like it has quite a bit to offer for the traveler.

All of the buildings were white?

by herzog63

Of the little bit of Amman that I got to see it appeared that there was quite a bit of construction going on! And all of the buildings were White! This is the area that I went for a walk in. I didn't take to many photos as there didn't seem to be anything special in the area.

Jordan

by seratonin

Like other middle eastern countries, Jordan is rich in historical sites as well as some breathtaking landscapes.Around the country, you'll find some fascinating witnesses from roman times. Like for example Umm Qais or the more well known Jerash in the north west of the country. In cities like Salt, Amman, Irbid or a lot others, it has nice islamic architecture. Visiting the mosques in such cities is often a great experience.the south of the country offers great desert landscapes. The famous Wadi Rum is a good example for this. Not to forget is probably the most visited attrachtion of Jordan: Petra. The picturesque nabatean town is located in between of Amman and Aqaba. A visit is a must.

about the dead sea

by call_me_rhia

The Dead Sea, located at about 400 meters below sea level, is the lowest point on earth and also the largest "Natural Spa" in the world. It's not a sea, technically speaking, but a lake. It's high concentration of salts and minerals make it a unique place: to bathe in its waters is supposed to cure many illnesses and pains - but even if you're completely healthy it's still fun to go there. Floating... floating... and knowing you can't sink, even if you try (and i tried very hard, just for a laugh). The second fondest memory is the scenery, the stunning salt rock formations along its shore... quite a sight!

about Petra and Beida (little Petra)

by call_me_rhia

Petra and Beida, is little sister. They are two ancient cities, located about 10 kilometres apart, that were build by the Nabatean people. Built is actually not the correct word, they were carved from the sandstone mountains that are typical of the area. Someone said they're the 8th wonder of the world - and I find it hard to disagree with this description learning how skillful and clever the nabateans were: they used to just carve a line of rock and then place pieces of wood in it - then poured water on the wood. As the wood expanded it used to break the soft sandstone, so that they did not have to carve the entire buildings and tombs by hand

about Wadi Rum

by call_me_rhia

Wadi Rum is a site of incredible natural beauty. It's also a living desert, since it's still inhabited by many beduin people. Lawrence of Arabia spent a long time here and called it “Rum the magnificent…vast, echoing and godlike”. In the desert, other than mountains and sand-beds, there are fine examples of rock art The silence of the desert - particularly - but also those soft orange dunes that seem to want to climb the rocky pinnacles that are scattered around
