(1) Negotiate prices. I discovered after several days that I could have paid less if I had negotiated more aggressively. If you are unaccustomed to doing this, try to hook up with someone who knows how to. The young Australian woman I met was an experienced, hardnosed negotiator who knew how to get the prices she wanted.(2) The Jordanians and Arabs seem to belong to extended families. If you hire a taxi ride, as I did, your taxi driver will guide you to a hotel that belongs to a family member. In short, you will be pushed gently, firmly, and inexorably toward family related businesses. As a result, you may not get the best prices. If you have a plan in mind, stick to it. Don't be rude but break free from the glossy politeness that can ensnare you.(3) Carry exact amounts of money in the local currency. It turns out that a negotiated price for a service is fluid and not honor-bound. For...

remember you are in a Muslim country and respect the 'dress code', especially in rural areas. Shorts or Bermudas are not appropriate for men and women. a tight or topless shirt should be avoided as well. As you probably know, you should never touch somebody or food with the left hand. don´t shake hands with Bedu women as long as they don´t offer you their hand as a greeting. It´s regarded as rude to point the soles of your feet towards other people in most Bedu tribes.

Religious holidays in Jordan are set in accordance with the Hirjah, or Moslim New Year, which is computed from the date of the Prophet Mohammad's migration from Mecca in 622 A.D. and the lunar calendar. This makes reckoning of exact dates difficult until the actual period of time occurs.

You won't need much Arabic when you're in Jordan, but you do need to read the numbers. Note that the upper row is the printed form; the lower row is handwritten. And the '0' is a raised dot. Decimal points are indicated, as in German or French, with what looks like a comma. Here they are:
