The Bedouins
  • Tip Rating:
  • I had in mind the classical cliché from Hollywood. I was imagining the Bedouins as a bunch of independent people raiding proudly in the desert. That was maybe true in the past but doesn’t hold true anymore.
They are now settled in a concrete village without any charm located close to Little Petra, 1-2 kilometers away and they are commuting every day to the main site.

They are almost exclusively living from the tourism. In the worst cases, that simply turns them on to beggars trying to sell you their souvenirs or services. This is the annoying part of Petra, at every major attraction; you will almost be harassed by a bunch of Bedouins trying to sell their stuff!

My guidebook doesn’t stop praising their hospitality and it’s true they are friendly but at the end you can never know if they do it for fun or with an interested goal in mind…

At least take your time and try to talk to them, don’t rush through every site to be seen, maybe you’ll have a better impression than the first one…

    The colours of Petra
  • Tip Rating:
  • The intense colours and extraordinary striations you see everywhere in Petra really give a whole new meaning to the term 'living rock". Everywhere you look you see the rock forming amazing patterns - here looking like shimmering pleated silk, there looking for all the world like a giant layer cake with frosting dripping over the top. Swirls of colour dip and dive, turn right angles and twist back on themselves. Reds, greys, blues and golds dazzle the eye. Inside the tombs they glow with an inner light, outside under the fierce sun thay become paler, more muted but take on deeper and stronger tones in the shadows and as the sun moves through the day they shift and change in a kaleidoscope of colour and pattern that is quite breathtaking.

Enjoy every single step and look into Petra
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you plan to visit Petra, be sure you wake up realy early in the morning. The best solution would be if you can spend more then one day there but if you decide to spend just one day then prepear yourself of hours and hours walking and filming. Don?t miss any part of this such great and beautiful place.

My best memory? In general, everything!!! But the moment when you finish your walk through the Siq and sudenly you are standing there and watching Petra in all her or his? beauty. This moment it?s impossible to describe, you must feel it. I, for sure will never forget it.

    Why not be a STUDENT?!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring your international studnt card with you.

When we bought the ticket, I was really happy among my gang. They have to pay full fare but I have an international student card, so my fare cut into half. It's really expensive to pay a visit there. Ticket for one day is JD21; for two is JD26; for three is JD30+.(can't remember)
So I paid JD13 for being a student.

    Tea with the girls
  • Tip Rating:
  • On my way up the neverending steps to the Monastery, I passed 2 girls selling cheap trinkets. After chatting with the nice ladies, they asked if I would join them for tea. We walked to an area with some convenient rocks for sitting. Then water was poured into a pot, from what looked like an old petrol container (yikes!). We sat and chatted while we drank tea (it was dee-lish by the way). The women asked my name and then sang a song together, that included my name. The water container was used as a percussion instrument and at every point in the song where my name was uttered, there was a lot of giggling. I couldn't understand the words of course, but I'm sure they were having a laugh at my expense :-D. Then I was asked if I had a wife, and after I said that I was single, they let me know that one of them was unmarried......then it was time for me to run along !!

    ~Bedouins~
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many of the buildings were homes to local Bedouin people until the mid 1980's. They were then moved to a new village in the north, a decision they were not happy with.

There are still a few Bedouin families living within the site of Petra, who make their living from the various drink stalls, and selling bits of pottery to tourists

Petra is really the 8th wonder of the old world.. and it has survied. It's located in the south of Jordan, and you can access this magical site by walking through a long and mysterious siq. Petra and Beida, is little sister. It was built by the Nabatean people. Built is actually not the correct word, as it was actually carved into the sandstone mountains that are typical of the area.

learning how skillful and clever the nabateans were: they used to just carve a line of rock and then place pieces of wood in it - then poured water on the wood. As the wood expanded it used to break the soft sandstone, so that they did not have to carve the entire buildings and tombs by hand

The Theatre - A place to rest from the sun

Petra is a great place to walk around but it can get very dry and hot and I found that I was quite tired by lunchtime. We climbed up the 'stairs' or 'seats' of the Theatre to the top. At the top there is a nice ledge on which to relax. This area is in shade in the early afternoon and is cool and a nice respite from the sun. The views from the top are great. I actually feel asleep for about 30 minutes and awoke refreshed and ready for more exploring.

    THE OUTER SIQ
  • Tip Rating:
  • An opening in the red and pink stone mountainside to the right of the Treasury leads to the theatre and the city centre.

    THE SIQ
  • Tip Rating:
  • On each side of the dirt path, brilliantly coloured rock rises toward the sky. The closer you get to the Treasury, the more vivid the shades of red, orange and pink seem to become.
