by Djinn76 A small backpack : useful to carry your stuff
Some kind of hat for the sun but the best protection is to stay under the shadow...
Solar cream can be useful as well...
Should I mention anything here? Obviously a good camera and enough memory to store the many pictures you are going to take!
* Enough water for the day (count 1 or even 2 bottle per person). No big deal if you get lost ;-) It is still possible to buy some on the site but it will be more expensive. * A Lunch Box : there are two restaurants on the site but they are tourist spot and if you carry your own food, you have more freedom. * A knife : to peal off fruits or vegetable... * A map: in theory you don't really need one if you stay around the main sites but if you start walking in the mountains without any guide it could definitely be useful... * a good guidebook : you can visit on your own, at your own pace and still have good information on what you see... survival kit: trainers by call_me_rhia If there's a single item you should not miss to pack for visiting Petra is that old (maybe smelly) pair of trainers... those really comfortable ones that you rarely wear anymore. You'll have to do a lot of walking to see a little bit of Petra - at least 12-15 kilometres... so you need shoes that don't give you blisters or hurt you. The entire site is very dusty, so you also need shoes that youdon't mind ruining (because you will). So pack those old trainers, for heaven's sake Leave a Comment

by Gili_S Comfortable shoes will be good idea if you plan to walk, good walking sandals can be good as as long as you don't step on the hot soft sand, that might burn your feet on the heat of the day.
Wide lens will be very useful in the narrow places.
Thin comfortable pants/short, long sleeves shirt if you sensitive to the sun, a hat. During winter bring pullover or something, it can get cold.
You can buy water and drinks at the gate and later down the canyon at the site, but anyhow, you will need to drink a lot, this is the desert, so remember to have water with you. Leave a Comment

Casual shoes for long walk, cap or scarf to protect your head ( if you going there in summer), light clotes
If you use photo films you can buy them there but I am not sure are they in good condition, so maybe it´s not bad to buy them outside and be sure to have enough. If you use digital camera bring as much MB or GB as you can!!!
Buy enough water outside of Petra. Inside could be expensive. Leave a Comment

by jadedmuse Jordan is a Muslim country and you'll see many of the women wearing scarves to cover their heads - this isn't necessary for Western women visiting, but it IS respectful to keep your arms and legs covered, even if you're visiting Petra which can get very hot during the summer months. Lightweight natural fibers are a good way to go. Leave a Comment

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat to protect you from the sun, and always carry plenty of drinking water.

Definitely bring a flashlight of some kind with you, even in the Summer. I visited during the winter and with shorter daylight hours it would be nice to have one. It's a very big place and it takes an hour or so to walk out and you don't want to do it when it is PITCH BLACK! :) Leave a Comment
