Along the walk up to the monastery is a short turn off track signposted to the Lion Biclinium - in here are tombs decorated with Medusa heads and lions and other less decorated tombs.

Only takes a couple of minutes each way to get to a spot enough to see these and get some photos.

Beautifully coloured rocks are to be found in this small gorge as well - some a really deep red colour.

If you are going to al-Dayr, you might as well do this. Some of the detail is worth seeing. There are two lions carved at the entrance and the head of Medusa on each side of the structure.
