If visiting Petra, avoid long distance tour buses from Eilat in Israel. Crossing the border seems to take forever and is expensive. Our guide seemed to be more interested in showing us his buddies' souvenir shops than taking us around the site itself. It best to stay at Petra itself where you can take a couple of day to visit. There are now lots of hotels nearby Leave a Comment

Beware in Petra and other place in Jordan, Petrol station attendants are trying very hard to cheat the tourists. The master of that is the owner or attendant of Petra petrol station. They have several trick in their pocket and the most common is to simulate a break down of the petrol dispenser, start it again but at the end charging you an extra 5 or 10 JOD. Just watch the info on the gas dispenser and the manipulation of the attendant. Also, wait as much as needed to get your money back !! Do not leave anything as tip !!!! Leave a Comment

by crazyman2 A tax is added to drinks in the large restaurant in the middle of the Petra site. Beware! The maths of some of the waiters is rather... mmm... creative! In our Petra by Candlelight visit one waiter had made an 'error' for over twenty people ---it was nearly a day's pay for him in 90 minutes! Of course the manager knew nothing of it...
Check the calculations and demand a refund of the 'little extra'.

Yes she's cute... by suzanne89 As cute or as pushy as they are, we all know that these are not real antiques right?
If you really cannot shake a pushy vendor tell them you will be back tomorrow. Leave a Comment

camels, donkeys, horses everywhere at Petra by jlanza29 Just like at Giza at the Pryamids, here there are tons of people trying to sell you all kinds of junk !!!! I don't have a problem with people trying to make a living but they should be seperated in an area just to sell stuff...they approach you from all sides !!!! dirty chains, old coins, you name it they try to sell to you....not a pesty as in Eygpt but still they are everywhere....also there are camels, horses, donkey's everywhere...that means there poop is eveywhere also, so you must watch your step so you won't step in it !!!!!! What a shame if only the Jordian goverment would do something about it !!!!! Leave a Comment

Go up the hill to where the locals shop... by suzanne89 One the main road all shops are advertising to move your digital pictures from memory to CD for about 4JD. This is quite expensive. If you go off the main tourist path to the actual little city area it should be at least half as expensive. We even bought our own blank CD and then went to the Kodak store and it was even less. The internet cafes in this area are also much cheaper.
Just realize you will pay more on this main road and they really will not bargain.
Also realize everything you buy in this tourist area will be much more expensive than where the locals are shopping. Leave a Comment

Camels by Blatherwick Opportunities are everywhere. You can ride horses down the Siq. You can have your picture taken with a camel. Donkeys can take you up the hills. If you haven't had your experience with any of these beasts then you can do it here... for a price.
Get off your butt and walk ya' lazy ... Leave a Comment

don't be a mule by hat53 When visiting with a group a horse ride is mandatory. It is only 500 meters and the horse men expect a big tip (2 JD). Then you have to tell them what time you will be back so they can take you back to the entrance.
Don't pay your tip or only pay 1 JD. There is also a ride back and (I guess) they will also expect a tip for the ride back. If they horse man is persistent say that you have pay for only half a horse so you will give half a tip. I you decide you take the horse trip back make sure to be back in time otherwise there won't be any horses waiting for you.
I paid for my horse and walked, so no discussion about tips, there are also some interesting sites to see on your trip to the entrance. With no horse you don't have to be back at the beginning of the siq because they are expecting you. Leave a Comment

It is not permitted for motorized vehicles to enter the site. But if you don’t want to walk, you can hire a horse or a horse-drawn carriage to take you through the one kilometre Siq. For the elderly and/or handicapped, the Visitors' Centre, close to the entrance of the Siq, will issue a special permit (at an extra fee), for the carriage to go inside Petra to visit the main attractions. Once inside the site, you can hire a donkey, or for the more adventurous, a camel - both come with handlers and take designated routes throughout the site.
