Old Market near al Husseini Mosque: where to shop - avoid the mall - go to the souk!

by glassgardener

There are a group of small shops that are there for the locals. Park and walk. As you enter the shop the worker may yell out "Salam al'lekum", you must respond "al'lekum salam". this shows that you know what you are doing and gives respect. Ignore this, and you will be paying alot more! You must bargain for the prices and look around before you do. Your best deals are if you add in things that you want while lowering the sellers price. Start with a low offer, but not too low. Insulting offers will leave you with nothing. This is a great place to buy arab music, arab clothing, incense and carved wood boxes among other things.Don't go alone, hold your packages close and your money closer and you will be fine.Notice the houses carved right into the mountain! worry beads, arabic cds, carved wood screen, dishdasha and head gear

Shops in the souq: Amman's souq

by MiguelMV

Don't expect to find a souq like in Istanbul or Marrakesh. Apart from being an "open air" souq (with no roofs or buildings holding it), Amman's souq is not really a place for tourists to buy things. It is more a place for locals, with cheap prices, with food shops, barber shops, groceries, butchers', cheap clothing shops etc ... you might find some shops with handicraft or souvenirs for tourists, but just a very very few. But, be sure that prices here are much lower than in any other touristc place in Jordan. As low as 4 or 5 times the price you would be asked for if you buy anything in a shop near a touristic site. However, it's an interesting place, and spending a while walking around Amman's souq won't be a waste of time. The souq is located downtown, near the Roman Theatre and King Hussein Mosque. Cheap clothes, food, vegetables, kitchen tools, handicrafts Not much

Music Box: Buying cds

by MiguelMV

If you want to buy cds in Amman, mind that most of the shops downtown, specially those in the souk, sell only home made copied cds. When asking for original cds, shop owners looked suprised and insisted in selling a copy telling that the quality is the same and the price is much lower. However, I didn't want to buy any copy, but some original jordanian pop cds. So I was told to go to Music Box shop at Mecca Mall shopping center. And yeah ... there I found a shop with original cds to buy. 4 brand new jordanian cds recently released for 24 dinars. Not bad. Cds, Jordanian and Arabic music, International music.

Wedouine tent at Wadi Rum

by MiguelMV

Wedouine tents in the middle of the desert are usually situated near the places where the 4x4 cars stop. Visitors will be offered a glass of tea (really nice and tasty), without the need to buy anything. You might find some interesting handicraft, maybe some local clothing, desert stones, tea, cardamom .... but the price is not specially cheap. Remember that these shops are certainly made for tourists. But, it is a nice experience. And the shop tenders are always nice, polite, and they welcome you to sit for a while at their tent, no matter if you finally buy anything from them

Jeff's Book Shop: Books about Jordan and Petra

by MiguelMV

This is mainly a book shop, where you can find a wide assortment of the different books published about Jordan in general and Petra in particular. It is not specially cheap compared to others, but I wouldn't say that is more expensive than those other shops near Petra's entrance. Books are properly stored and you will find the all different language versions of the titles published. Books, postcards and a few souvenirs.

The Sandcastle in Petra: The Ottoman Room

by TheWanderingCamel

The Sandcastle is a well known souvenir shop in Petra but has recently set up a large back room as a collection of "old things". Most of them date from between 50 and 100 years ago, and range from ethnic objects like head dresses to furniture, bowls and bibelots and carpets. They are expensive - but no charge for looking. 24 carat gold

by moonpoppy

No shop in particular - but heyyyyy, so many places to buy beautiful 24-carat gold jewellery! Gold .. gold ... gold ... oh yes, and gold! At least half the price you would pay in the UK but for very good quality, heavyweight chains and bracelets.

Jordan River Foundation: Traditional crafts

by TheWanderingCamel

The Jordan River Foundation shop is a wonderful showcase of traditional handicraft, much of it in a very modern guise, and all of the very highest quality. All the items on sale are made by village women working in a variety of programmes that encourage and empower village women and their families by providing employment and fostering entrpreneurship that benefits vulnerable communities and is an agent for the most positive change. The shop is a cornucopia of beautiful embroideries, textiles, small gifts such as soaps, candles, photo frames, bags, etc. Cushions, tablecloths, wall hangings, rugs, table mats, quilts and bed covers - there is something to suit every budget.Posted by leyle $2 and up, and up.While not cheap, the items represent excellent value as the work is of the highest quality. The problem comes in trying to choose!

Sandbottles in Jordan

by TheWanderingCamel

Some popular souvenirs are the decorated sand bottles, sometimes with the most intricate designs done in the sand, with the aid of a knitting needle and a funnel! Be careful, often dyed sand is used rather than the natural sand. These coloured designs will fade fairly soon and very quickly indeed if exposed to the sun. It is better if possible to buy the bottles in Petra, where the sand used is almost always the natural sand of the rocks. These bottles and the sand in them are often referred to (by the salesmen!) as "Petra's treasure".Prices of these bottles vary enormously according to the design and the size of the bottles. Some of the work done is quite extraordinary. Very often a stallholder will have a large bottle on display with samples of all the possible designs worked in the sand. He doesn't really want to sell this bottle, it is a "showpiece". You can gauge the quality of the...
