A board walk across the marsh by TheWanderingCamel The word Azraq means "blue" in Arabic and before water pumping began in the 1980s the oasis provided "a sparkling blue jewel" in the desert. Underground water flowing down from Jebel Druze in Syria surfaced here and the slightly older guide books speak of it as a marsh that sheltered up to half a million migrating birds at any one time. In recent years the towns of Irbid and later Amman drew heavily on the water here and by 1994 the marsh was all but destroyed. However an alternative source of water has been found in the aquifer of Dissieh and water is gradually being pumped back into the marsh. A six million dollar restoration scheme was funded and implemented and over 160 species of birds have already returned to the wetland. Last year it was estimated that 347,000 birds were to be found in the marsh. The area now offers homes to water buffaloes, blue-necked ostriches, Nubian ibexes, and countless varieties of dragonflies. Board walks and bird hides have been built to enable visitors to see and enjoy this green area in the heart of the desert. The entrance fee is 2JD Posted by Lulu Leave a Comment Phone: +962.5.383.5017Directions: To get there isn't easy. If you head east out of Amman with a rental car you pass Qasr Hraneh and Qasr Amra on the road going through Muwaggar and arrive at Azraq. The Nature Reserve is close to Azraq al Janubi, and perhaps 3kms from the Castle of Azraq.Website: www.rscn.org.jo Other Contact: www.jordanjubilee.com

A gazelle in Ajloun by TheWanderingCamel The Ajloun Reserve is located in the Ajloun Highlands in woodlands which are like the original forest which once covered most of northern Jordan. Many woodland animals inhabit the reserve, including badgers, foxes and a few fierce wild boars; and also many typical birds like the great tit, gold finch, turtle dove, hooded crow and jay. In spring it is a profusion of wild flowers, with drifts of colourful anemones and wild rock roses. Two hiking trails have been laid out to stroll or hike more seriously in the forest. There is a camp for overnight stays. It occupies a large grassy clearing, enclosed by oak, pistachio and strawberry trees and offers beautiful views of the reserve and beyond. On clear days, you can see the west bank and the snow- capping Jebel Sheikh in Lebanon. There are 10 four- person tented lodges available with small terraces and beds inside. The charges for sleeping go down from 20JD for 1 person to 15JD/person for 5 people or more. The entrance fee is 3JD Posted by Lulu Leave a Comment Phone: 00962.2.6475672Directions: The Ajloun reserve is not easy to find, it is better to get in touch with the RSCN first at tourism@rscn.org.joWebsite: www.rscn.org.jo Other Contact: www.jordanjubilee.com

Aerial view of the site of Bethany by TheWanderingCamel An important archaeological site was discovered recently close to the Dead Sea. The discoveries included a Byzantine monastery; several smaller churches, chapels, monks' hermitages, caves, and cells; a large Byzantine church complex adjacent to the Jordan River; an impressive ceramic pipeline bringing water to Bethany beyond the Jordan from several kilometres to the east; a large plastered pool and adjacent chapel halfway between the Bethany settlement and the Jordan River; and a pilgrims' rest station and caravanserai east of Bethany, on the route to Mount Nebo. This site was identified as the Biblical Bethany, where Martha and Mary lived, and where John the Baptist baptised Jesus. This identification was officially recognised in 2000 when it was visited by Pope John Paul II. The site is a large one, covering several square kilometers. the principal part of it is the Tell, also called "Elijah's Hill"), where you can see several churches, three caves and three baptismal pools, together with the water supply, of channels leading from the two wells. Floating in the Dead Sea by TheWanderingCamel The Dead Sea is full of salt, and as most people know it is impossible not to float in it! It is supposed to be very good for one's skin, but the salt means that any abrasions or pimples will sting like fury and when you get water in your eyes they also sting a lot. Certainly floating is fun, but getting upright again isn't, you splash around quite a lot, and unless you are being very cautious you get water in your eyes all over again - DO NOT RUB THEM! The sea bottom is covered with slimy mud! It's not far from Amman but be careful not to miss the last bus back at 4pm or you will have to spend the night there and there is no budget accommodation available. This salt is very bad for any clothes you might put on on top of it, so it is pretty well mandatory to be able to wash it off afterwards. The public beach is not very pleasant, so it is best to use some of the facilities available. Leave a Comment Directions: To get to the Dead Sea it is easiest to go from Amman. There are buses from Muhajrin station that take you to the Dead Sea Resthouse at Sweymeh. You can also get there from Madaba. Posted by Lulu
