THE GOLAN HEIGHTS

by Elisabcn

The Golan Heights is a plateau in south west of Syria which borders with Jordan, Israel and Lebanon. This area has a rich history and features numerous archeological sites, mountains, streams, waterfalls and the Biblical Sea of Galilee. After the First World War the whole territory became land of Syria, which by that time was administrated by France. Being a very strategic point, in 1967 it was occupied by Israel during the “Six days war” and again during the Yom Kipur War (1973). In 1981 Israel added the Heights to his territory and applied its law and administrative system offering to its inhabitants the Israeli citizen. ONU declared that this Israeli decision was null and without any value. Syria and Israel still contest the ownership of the Heights but have not used overt military force since 1974. The great strategic value of the Heights both militarily and as a source of water...

Azrak castle

by solopes

Built in the 13th century over the ruins of a roman fortress, the castle of Azraq is today a new ruin. Interesting to see the heavy basalt door that remains from the roman period, and if you dare to climb the apparently dangerous stair, and walk a while in the absolutely dangerous first floor, looking down you will have an excellent idea of the structure used to build ceilings and up floor pavements. Noticed for being used by T.E. Lawrence, it deserves a stop if you should pass near the place. We had no time to visit the town and I got the feeling that... we should have.

UMM QUAIS

by Elisabcn

This site 100km North of Jordan, almost touching the Syrian border, is not to miss. Its ancient name is Gadara and, like Gerasa, it was one of the members of the Decapolis (a kind of federation of Greek cities). The remains (Cardo Maximus and Decumanus with some shops, temples and a theatre) are not as interesting as the remains in Jerash. The quality of the work and decoration is also lower (maybe because of the kind of stone used?). What makes Gadara spectacular is the combination of its setting (perched on a hilltop overlooking the Jordan Valley) and its black colour (the constructions were made of basalt). Umm Quais is also the only place in Jordan where you can admire the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. There are no facilities inside Gadara, only a fine restaurant with excellent food and service. After some days eating sandwiches for lunch, we really enjoyed it! When the weather...

MUSLIM FORTRESS: AJLUN

by Elisabcn

The same day that we visited Jerash, we did a short stop at Ajlun to visit its castle. This castle on the top of the hill may look as a Crusaders’ fortress but it was built by Muslims (1184-1185) to protect the area against Crusaders (just in front of the valley there is the Crusaders’ castle of Belvoir) and also to keep the control of the iron mines of Ajlun. Apart from being an excellent example of military Muslim architecture of that time, this castle also offers a gorgeous views of the Jordan Valley. This castle lost its main purpose only two years after its construction when Saladin defeated the Crusaders at the battle of the Horns of Hattin (1189). That was the beginning of the end for the Crusaders in the Holy Land. During the following years the castle suffered different transformations to adapt itself to new owners and needs (Mongols, Mamluks) but for non expert eyes it still...

JERASH

by Elisabcn

This is a nice day trip north of Amman. Jerash is a fantastic archaeological site with monuments from the Roman, Byzantine and Muslim periods. Gerasa, its ancient name, was by the IIIrd century BC one of the members of the Decapolis (a kind of federation of Greek cities). Being very well situated along the incense and spice trade route, Jerash became a prosperous city soon.Jerash site is huge and you will need some hours (and some bottles of water in summer) to complete the tour, especially if you like to admire all the details. A good guide book (or guide) is recommended to enjoy your visit better. I especially enjoyed a stroll along the Cardo Maximus -the main Roman road- with beautiful Corinthian columns (not original but more decorative than the original ones), the Temple of Artemis built in 150AD (picture 3), the Hippodrome (if I remember well there were some scheduled Roman...

AMMAN

by Elisabcn

A huge and noisy city, Amman is the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom. It is a modern city, more cosmopolitan /westernised than other capitals in the Middle East. Air connections are good to most of the large cities in the region. There are also flight /bus connections to many other Middle East countries. There are many four, five and even six stars hotels. Most of the international flights arrive to Amman so if you are travelling to Jordan you have lots of chances that this city becomes the first site that you will see there. My pictures look not very tempting, I know. Someone may want to escape. But you just need to be a little patient because many wonderful sites are waiting for you at only few kilometres.Even if it has a contemporary look –it was developed basically in the second half of the 20th century- Amman’s history goes back many millennia and some archaeological sites like the...

Mount Nebo

by solopes

An absolute must go to religious people, just another place to the other, Mount Nebo is supposed to be Moses's burial place. A chapel was built covering the excavating site, and people keep on digging. The pope visited the place (there's a memorial), promoting its authenticity. The sights are... they say they are... the haze didn't allow me to confirm it. Interesting mosaics inside.

Al Karak or Kerak

by solopes

Built by the cruzaders in a steep hill, and later adopted and adapted by muslims, the fortress still shows signs of all their presences and transformations, giving an impressive idea of the strenght of the castle and the complexity of all its structures. The sights from the castle are beautiful.

Tip Photo
Madaba

by solopes

A common small church in a common small town shows in part of its pavement a mosaic from the 6th century, representing the map of the holly land. As you may guess, most of locals now live from producing and selling... mosaics. So, visit the church, a mosaic factory, one tourist shop, and... it's done. But if you're passing near the town, you should make the detour. I saw in TV that Madaba's mosaic tradition is larger than I was told, and that there are more interesting examples to see. If you're in a package you may be forced to my situation, but, being in your own reserve some more time.

Tip Photo
Umm Qays or Gadara

by solopes

In the extreme north, Gadara, an old and badly preserved roman city is the pretext to take you to Umm Qays, and let you have a look over the Golan Heights, in Siria. Looking at that sterile hills, it's impossible not to ask why all the disputes around it. The answer stands in the back: water. The Sea of Galilee, also called Lake Tiberias, gives birth to Jordan River and its valley. Its strategic control justifies the strong militarization of the area that confines you to the hilltop, and becomes difficult to see from distance. After seing the sights there's still a Roman city to visit. But if you have Jerash in your schedule there's no reason to spend too much time with it.
