Shoubak.

by cachaseiro

Shoubak is the oldest crusader castle in Jordan. It was badly destroyed by an earthquake though, so the place get´s less visitors than the castle at Kerak. It´s certainly worth a visit though and it has a very nice location with a fantastic view and it´s being restorated at the moment, so it should be even better to visit in the future.

Jerash/Jarash Roman treat 7 ---The Last!

by crazyman2

My last page about this site! Are you awake?Whilst we were exploring the North Theate and the Church of St.Cosmos & St.Damian we could here strange sounds. I told my wife (a Glaswegian) that it sounded like bagpipes ---in fact like British marches being piped! No, she insisted! As we made our way to the South Theatre... you've guessed!Well, bagpipes are thought to have originated in the Middle East; also, the British did occupy Jordan for a while...I hope that you enjoy these last few snaps and thank you for reading my seven pillars of little wisdom!

You are doing well to have got to my sixth page! So, having visited the north theatre it is time for the Temple of Artemis. It's an impressive place with many columns, different rooms, steps and.. and... and...a wheely bin! I just can't believe it! All this way, to the temple to worship a daughter of Zeus and there's a bin! Also, this is a good place to sip tea from the vendor. Our guide showed us that the columns are designed to move a little (earthquakes) and he put a stick under the base of one and it did sway. Mmm....rather him than me!I do wish that I had taken more photos of the Temple...sorry!It is a shame that there are no artists' impressions of these places. WAIT! Yes, there are those touristy books with overlays of artists' impressions in them. I've got one which covers Petra, Jerash and Amman. It's worth buying it!Well, there are only one morepage to write. Coming?

Jerash/Jarash Roman treat 4

by crazyman2

Page 4.Now, our guide took us up to the North Theatre at this point. So, we'll do the same.Walk along the Cardo (main street) go straight over the crossroads where there was once a tetrapylon. It is called the South Tetrapylon. This was a sixteen-columned structure that you would walk through in order to turn left, right or go straight on. Anyway, the bases of the columns remain. So go straight on, past the Nymphaeum on the left. The Nymphaeum was a grand fountain ---well, lots of fountains! It is so impressive! From where did the water spout? How did it get up there? How was the water pressure created?I did wish that I had a better telephoto lens on my camera! Before you arrive at the junction (North Tetrapylon) look over to your right to see the West Baths.Okay, at the tetrapylon stop!I'll tell you more on my next page!

Jerash/Jarash Roman treat 5

by crazyman2

Hi!Page 5! You're doing well! We're at the North tetrapylon (junction of the Cardo and North Decumanus).Ahead of you is another arch. It is the North Gate.Look at the columns on the side of the road to the arch. The columns are in bits and they are just laying there. Spot the archeologists' numbering on each one!Now turn left to enter the North Theatre.Climb up to the very top and look down at the stage. Walk around the stage. Marble! Sit and imagine the actors, the orators, the various 'acts' ...It seats over 1500 people.Apparently it is now in use again! Health & Safety issues for kids if you go right to the top. Oh, spot the holes for the ancient safety rails ---so were the Romans more safety aware than modern Jordanians ----perhaps the Romans drank a lot of wine if they were watching a performance!Page 6? Come on then!

Jerash/Jarash Roman treat 3

by crazyman2

Welcome! So, this is my third page about Jerash/Jarash.You've left the Oval Plaza (a Wow place!) and you are now walking slowly along the main street ---the Cardo. Yes, the are columns and huge flag-stones. Look out for signs of the sewer system under the stones of the street. There are manholes (inspection/entry points) which are circular. Also, look out for drinking troughs and fountains as well as steps leading up from the road level.Page 4 now, should you wish!

Jerash/Jasrash Roman treat 2

by crazyman2

Are you still with me? Good! My brief tour continues! So, going through the arch and past the Hippodrome, you will find the Temple Of Zeus on your left. Past that is the Oval Plaza. Wow! Just stop and take it all in! Imagine the citizens wandering around, meeting friends, discussing this and that...The Temple of Zeus is on the site of a previous temple whivh is on the site of a previous temple etc. There would have been lots of pillars all around it and our guide told us that there was an upstairs too.The Plaza is such a great place for a photo. If its Spring then enjoy the wild flowers too.Now move on to my third page if you wish.

Jerash/Jarash Roman treat 1

by crazyman2

Do spend half a day or more wandering this site. It is amazing! There is so much here ---and most of it is still buried. There are lots of archeological digs going on ----multinational in some cases.Want to see a hippodrome? Jerash!Want to see temples? Jerash!Want to see arches? Jerash!Want to see churches? Jerash!Want to see amphitheatres? Jerash!Want to see baths? Jerash!Want to see a breathtaking plaza? Jerash!Okay! You understand! Now, as you enter through Hadrian's Arch, look out forthe boy who sells postcards. They're so cheap and there are no problems with them. The biy should be at school but his father died, our guide told us, leaving the boy to support his family. He will speak to you in about 15 languages! The hippodrome is where chariot racing and some mock fighting were performed in front of 15000 spectators. You can watch chariot racing each day, I think; there are...
