Glass bottom boats

by solopes

Glass bottom boats provide several programs on the reefs. If you don’t mind having lunch late in the afternoon, you may book a long trip with lunch aboard included. For longer periods in the reefs, it’s possible to reach them by car. But... a warning: for those with similar experience in good reefs, the effects of pollution may cause a disappointment - the trip is good, the the bottom poorer than expected.

Transportation Around Jordan

by JJfromNJ

You can hire a taxi for either short trips or long distance travel around the country. Indeed, taxi drivers will approach you about this. I hired one in Aqaba and went up to Wadi Rum. Then a few days later, the same driver picked me up from there and drove me to Petra. He was more than willing to pick me up again and drive me as far as Amman if I wanted. He was very friendly, stopping for photos during the drives and even buying us drinks. We also ate breakfast virtually for free at his brother's restaurant in Aqaba.Obviously buses are cheaper. They are reliable and the way to go around the country. Usually you will end up in a mini bus and you will have to wait until enough people show up before it leaves. They are very easy to arrange and go mostly everywhere throughout the country. Despite the heat and number of people, they were actually comfortable for the most part.

Police control

by jarek_pokrzywnicki

Speed control by police is very common on Jordan roads especially on main highway Aqaba - Amman. Usually they are visible from the remote (white cards with Police sign) but sometimes they may be hidden with other cards so be aware. They have very good American laser speed control devices and the fines are quite high. I was trapped by such a radar control from around a kilometer (laser control) but the discussion with policemen was very polite. I was impressed with the quality of equipment they have they were proud to have it so finally they let me go free of imposing any fines.

Car-hire in Jordan

by barryg23

Hiring a car is a great way to explore Jordan, especially as the public transport system is not perfect and many interesting sights lie off the beaten path. The road network, however, is reasonably good, and having a car allows you to see many of the difficult to reach places. We hired a car for the first 6 days of our trip to Jordan. Starting from Madaba, we drove north to explore Jerash, Umm Qais and Pella, before returning to Madaba and then driving all the way south to Aqaba via the King's Highway over a number of days.We had heard great reports of Reliable Rent a Car, a local car hire firm, so we decided to reserve with them. Having driven around Morocco & Tunisia in dodgy Fiat Unos, it was a pleasant surprise to be given a large and almost new Toyote Corolla. The cost was 34 JD per day, plus an extra 35 JD for dropping the car off in Aqaba. Everything worked out very well and I'd...

Arrival, Visas and Immigration

by PierreZA

The Queen Alia Airport in Amman is easy to negotiate. It is quite far out of Amman, so give yourself at least 45 min travel time.It seems that most Nationalities can get a visa on arrival. I got a visa from the Embassy in Pretoria before I left. I took only one day, and for South Africans it is FREE at the Embassy in Pretoria (I am not sure if it is the same on arrival). I had no problems passing through immigration, nor with customs.

Busses

by PierreZA

Getting busses leaving Amman for other towns was one of the biggest frustrations I had. The travel guide (a very good guide in general, published – 2006) I used, was unfortunately inaccurate. It seems that most bus stations have changes location during the past year or so. It was much easier getting a bus from the town to Amman. It is possible though to get a public bus to Madaba, Petra, Salt, Jerash etc.I took the bus from Petra to Amman, which was only 5 JD. To Madaba, Salt and Jerash from Amman, costs less than 1 JD.I often saw JETT busses, but did not have the chance to use them – it does seem like a good option though, as they are air-conditioned and most probably much more comfortable.

Abu Dhabi International Airport

by PierreZA

There are 2 terminals, (1 & 3) at Abu Dhabi Airport. Terminal No3 is very modern and new, in contrast with the older Terminal 1. If you need to transfer from one terminal to the other, give yourself enough time, as you may have to walk for quite some time.I had a long stand over time on my way there. For 100 AED, you can use the lounge of the Airport Hotel, at Terminal 1. The fee includes all drinks and food. You can also make use of a ‘sleeping room’, where there are very comfortable reclining chairs to take a nap.

Etihad Air

by PierreZA

I flew to Amman (via Abu Dhabi) from Johannesburg with Ethiad Airways. It was my first time to fly with this airline, and had a good experience. The staff is very professional and service is friendly. The in-flight entertainment and food was more than satisfactory. They also offered the lowest fare from SA to Amman via Abu Dhabi.I will definitely fly with them again.

Taxis

by PierreZA

Like in most countries all over the world, you can almost expect taxi drivers to overcharge. I was actually only overcharged once in Amman, but many times in Wadi Musa (Petra). The driver has to turn on the meter, which starts at 250 Fills. I never paid more than 2 JD for any trip in Amman, other than the 4 JD on my first trip when I was ripped off. In Wadi Musa, it is a short trip to Petra by taxi. The going rate should be about 1 - 1,5 JD, but some drivers wanted up to 4 JD! Compared to Amman, this is very expensive! It is customary for men to sit in the front seat, and unaccompanied women should sit in the back when they use a taxi.
