Driving in the desert

by MalenaN

For driving in the desert in Wadi Rum a 4WD vehicle is a must.Tourists who have rented a car to travell around Jordan in can park it on the parking space next to the resthouse and continue in a rented jeep with guide. Or why not on a camel?

Hitchhiking is easy and safe

by dabuwan

I did travel a lot around Jordan hitchhiking. It's easy, safe and quite common among the locals as well. The driver always expexts a small tip before you get off the car. I even got a 80 km lift from a friendly policeman as well...

From Amman to Damascus

by MalenaN

There are several buses every day for Damascus, leaving Abdali busstation in Amman. The journey takes about 4 hours + the time at the border. Another way, just a little bit more expensive but probably quicker (as there are fewer persons to go through customs) is to take a servise taxi. Just go to Abdali busstation and wait until a car fills up. I paid 5,5 JD between Amman and Damascus. The service taxi will stop at Baramke busstation in Damascus.

buses and taxis

by call_me_rhia

There are not many buses within Jordan, but at least they ply the major routes. See the website below for specific information. Most people travel by share taxi, so all you need to know is where they leave from: there's no fixed timetables, they leave once one is full. In case you dont find a collective taxi or a bus, take a regular taxi, as they are not too expensive. In Amman you can try and ask Sam, a Palestinian rock musician and cab driver who used to live in Louisiana: he speaks perfect english and he's fun as hell. This is his work mobile number: 079 417847

In 1995 there was only a public ferry going from Aqaba to Nuweiba/Egypt. The trip was about 3 hours and the ferry was crowded with workers going home at the end of Ramadan (from Saudi Arabia to Egypt) to celebrate with the family (packed with presents!!!)!

Queen Alia Int. Airport is the point of entry for most visitors. Many airlines from all over the world fly to Amman. The national carrier is Royal Jordanian Airlines. The country is not very big and the roads are in excellent conditions. The car or the bus are the best means of transportation. There is only one domestic flight route served by RJ between Amman and Aqaba.

by Elmsaafir

The desert highway is the fastest way to get to Petra from Amman...Unfortunately, it's rather bleak, but that can be beautiful in its own way. The road overall was great. The cab driver that took me down there at one time hit 170 kph, at dusk, with no headlights. It was rather exciting...

by LicoriceLops

Catching the hydrofoil from Aquaba to Nuweiba can be quite the experience. I have never completed so many steps just to get on a ferry! Many of the guide books tell you that ferry tickets can be obtained at the Arab Marine building just north of the post office in Aquaba. However, around mid-2001 they closed down the ticket sales office in the basement of the building and moved it to the ferry terminal. There are a few travel agents around that will also sell you tickets, but the price varies as they all add different commissions onto their price. We found the best way to get ferry tickets is to go to the ferry terminal south of town a few hours before the scheduled sailing. Even the taxi drivers will insist on stopping for you to buy tickets at agents, but your best and cheapest location will be the ferry terminal. At the ferry terminal there's a very informative sign in English about how...
