Water: the critical resource

by vinc_bilb

The water is a vital and critical resource, so, saving it is a hughe constraint, with consequences for the not warned tourist daily life:- No cork in bathtubs - the toilet paper is not supposed to be put itself into toilet but into a dedicated basket, in order to minimize the usage of the water.- A small shower head is often an alternative to the flush system

Repect the king and the royal family.

by vinc_bilb

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy . The monarch is the head of state. Behind this official statement, a lack of respect regarding the King or the royal family is considered as a rude insult and disrespectful. The attachment of the Jordanians to the King is real and does not limit itself to the omnipresent official portraits. Photos from King Abdullah II or from his father King Hussein are everywhere in private arrays (shops, houses,...).It's a common sense but, whatether is your political sensibility, Jordan is a kingdom and the respect to the king is the default rule to be applied here

WARNING! MADABA HANDICRAFT CENTER "BAIT & SWITCH"

by Gaylaa

The MADABA HANDICRAFT CENTER is a huge souvenir shop near Madaba on the road to Mt. Nebo. They demonstrate how mosaics are made, have an enormous variety of mosaics and souvenirs and a large staff which is overly-attentive. They are, unfortunately, mentioned in the book "Jordan Jubilee".I purchased an expensive (350 JD) hand-painted ostrich egg in this shop on Oct. 14, 2007. They packaged the egg and taped the box while I was paying for it. When I opened the box a week later, I discovered that they had switched the egg I paid for, for a less-expensive egg. I contacted the manager of the shop and he offered to exchange the egg if I returned it - of course, I had already left Jordan, which, I'm sure is exactly what he had counted on - or sell me the egg I had already purchased for "half price". He also didn't seem the least bit shocked about the "bait & switch" with the egg and never...

The Visa in the Airport

by sanluipal

At arrive at Amman airport, before catch your baggage, you will have to get the visa in your passport. When you enter in another space, you have the money exchange in the left side, and next is the visas place. It could be a bit confuse, arrive, change money and get the visa, and then get the bags. So if you can, change money before you go.

Standing Out

by antistar

In many parts of Jordan I seemed to really stand out, especially the more remote and less touristy places. My face is very pale, and the strong Jordanian sun exposes my Irish heritage by making my hair shine red. This meant lots of stares and lots of strange reactions from people. In every situation but one, this was always friendly, or at worst nervous and unsure. It was always kids or young adults. Most of the time I'd see a face staring at me wide eyed, and when I looked back they would shout excitedly "hello!" "welcome!" or "salam aleikoum!" If I responded in kind, they would laugh and smile and run away excitedly. Sometimes they would just stop at stare in shock. The problem isn't racism, it's just that they are not used to dealing with people from different places. There's not been a lot of tourists in the country the last 6 years. It's a friendly country, but I did have one bad...

Jordan: Corruption Of Police

by Richterscala12

Travel - Warnung for Jordan: Mid - east (nuclear-)war might be ahead !The Police in Jordan in Jordan is underpaid and like to be corrupt like nearly everywhere Now.If you travel from Syria, you get with european passport a month-visa at the border, they take thumb and picture of now directly to FBI and CIA to the US, no problem for normal people. You have to visit the nearest police-station within one month to extend for two further month.I came one day before, but the police-officer excused for 'on holiday' and to come back on Saturday. Getting there he was asking for overstaying: Money ( for his Pocket?)I refused and missed the ship, because they denied exit before paying 48 JD fine. On Landway to Eilath happened the same on Landborder. The Borderpolice in Aqba refusedto accept the complain, so the Aqba-Townpolice, the Wali ( Governor of the King) and finallythe secret-police,...

Road Safety

by antistar

This is a real danger in Jordan. They are pretty crazy drivers. I saw at least one crashed car on the roads nearly every day. Some of the scariest things on the roads are the overladen trucks, many with barely anything, and sometimes nothing, tyind down the goods on the back. This is worrying enough when the goods are just fruit, but when they are great slabs of sandstone rock, this is really disconcerting.

Visas

by antistar

Jordanian visas are required for all visitors, and can be obtained at the airport, or from an embassy before you leave home. The cost is 10JD. The benefit of getting a visa before you leave is so that you can avoid the very long and very slow queue at Queen Alia airport. I arrived at 4 in the morning, and despite it being much quieter at that hour, it still took an hour to queue. And that was after I had queued to change my money at the money changer desk next door to the visa desk. You can also pick up visas at all border crossings, except at the George Allenby/King Hussein crossing coming from Israel, as you are officially not entering Jordan there (you are officially already in it).
