No alcohol in Kuwait? Yeah, Right!

Being a Muslim country, alcohol is illegal in Kuwait.However, illegal and unavailable are NEVER the same thing!If you would like to try the local homebrew strike up a conversation with a taxi driver and tell him you want some "Sadeeqee". This is a god-awful concotion that tastes similar to death and makes you shake your head and shiver with every shot. It usually costs 5-6 Kuwaiti Dinars (kd) (roughly 19-23 US dollars) for one and a half liters. It may take you several taxi trips before you find one who trusts you and knows where to get it.The best way to drink sadeeqee (in my humble opinion) is to treat it like tequila shots (except adding a generous squeeze of lemon juice before you take the shot.)I would suggest that you have a glass of Coke or some other sweet drink to use as a chaser.Be smart. When drinking in Kuwait, you're better off not going in public. Penalties are...

See what this man is trying to do!! Crossing the highway by running in between cars! I have seen the worse accidents in my life throughout my visits to Kuwait. It's usual to see accidents especially on highways but in Kuwait there is 90% chance that there are casualities in these accidents. You would see the car in an unexpainlable state (either cut in half or the engine sitting where the driver used to sit, or the car becoming a hutchback!!). So you don't need to take a risk and cross the street like that!

I dare you. Seriously, this place is like a ghost town. And the women folks must know it, so to hide their embarrasment, they cover their faces. Just try to find some life here, it doesn't exist much. We were practically the only folks on the Water Tower Observation deck and one of very few visiting the Scientific Center. I'm not complaining. I like solitude... but it just was kinda lonely there. Even the highway to Bubyan - we were one of few cars on the highway. Twilite Zone Feel...

Everything is made in the finest materials, and the whole place is designed by the owner...Even though it is located in Wafra, almost an hours drive fom Kuwait City this is without a doubt a place that is worth a visit! Having stables that is better than where most people live, and in the middle of it all a big pond with fontains and bridges! It is undescribeable!

Take a ride on the wild side...

An 4x4 SUV with a full tank of gas, a good spare tire, a GPS, a cell phone (GSM), water (at least 4 liters), sunglasses, and some good common sense. All you need to enjoy a drive in the desert. Stay on the established roads. Why? Because you will either blow out your tire on a sharp rock (It is SOOO fun to change a tire in the sand) or run into a unexploded bomb or land mine. If you follow this simple bit of advice, you will have a much nicer drive, trust me.I love driving out there.....really do.

Beaches:For a country with so much coastline (290km) in relation to its size, Kuwait has relatively few public beaches and even fewer where Western women would feel comfortable, hence the glut of private beach clubs, the membership of which start at around KD180 per year at Messilah Beach Hotel, and at which water sports abound as well as other sporting facilities. The beach here is sort of reconstituted, being two large sand pits, filled apparently with imported French sand, and has three or four steps down to the sea, as well as a jetty and pier. That said public beaches are available, but the amount of rubbish on them makes them unpleasant and the local jet ski fraternity make going into the sea even more hazardous - there have been several jet ski relatedfatalities.

As you can see, there may not be a lot off the beaten path, but you do have the opportunity to see a lot of camels and other people travelling. It is also a great place to take pictures of sunrises.
