Favorite thing: Although Baalbek is a hot valley, it is also a fertile one, and the desert-like tones of the earth and the mountains should not fool you. This is an exceptionally fertile region of Lebanon, one that produces crops both legal and illegal. It also produces a wide variety of flora that is quite beautiful and that abounds amongst the equally prevalent ancient ruins. It is not difficult to spot poppies, roses and carnations, as well as the tall cedars, less noble cousins of the famous ones that grace the country's flag.
Favorite thing: Similar to other arid regions, geckos seem to abound in the Beqaa Valley. These little creatures are quick and agile, and can be easy to spot but quite difficult to capture with your camera. Nevertheless, they are excellent companions when visiting ruins on your own!
