A good map to bring is GEO Projects map of Lebanon and Beirut. I enjoyed it very much. You can buy it in English, Arabic or Frensh. The Lebanese map is in scale 1: 200 000 and the Beirut map (on the other side) is in scale 1: 10 000. The maps are easy to read and the Beirut map much better than the one you get at the tourist office.
The map can be bought at several places in Beirut (Virgin Mega Store and National Museum) for 12 000 LL.

decent waterproof small camera bag (yes they do have the odd downpour in lebanon and when it rains it really does pour) to fit a body and a spare lens + filters

for when you're out on day trips take a larger back like a camera rucksack, i get away with the lowepro micro trekker, small enough not to be a hinderance but large enough to carry a couple of spare lenses and a flashgun + tripod

this place is a photographers dream make sure you bring a wide angle as well as a medium telephoto if you're using an slr (or a 28-135 zoom would be handy). I dont' use a long telephoto but if you can bring it then do. Make sure you have at least one fast lens though because the nightshots you can get here are great. It's like a whole new place at night time. Don't forget the tripod for the lowlight landscape shots.

The sun here is usually very good so don't forget the polariser.

depending on your camera and how many photos you take i really woudln't take anything less than 2GB in memory for a week's stay... if you can carry more... if not just make sure you take either a photodrive or a laptop and bring your card reader as the electronics in lebanon are quite expensive.

Even if you're going in the hottest months of the year i.e. August grab a sweater with you as you might have the chance to tour the Lebanese mountains which gets chilly in the night

If you visit the mountain area and/or Baalbek during the winters bring a warm sweater. The heating in the budget hotels can be a bit dodgy.

Dec, Jan, Feb, : It is rather cold specially in the mountains. expect heavy rains and thunderstorms. Sweaters and pullovers are a must. An umbrella can be helpful.
July, August, Sept: VERY hot and humid.Short and T-shirts are excellent.and a HAT.
March, April, May, June, Oct, Nov: the weather is nice with a possibility of some rain showers, or hot winds. A shirt with a light sweater are enough.

Nothing Special.except for the sensitive skin in summer:Sun protection.

  • Take a carry-on and a regular suitcase.

Wear comfortable shoes because you will probably be walking a lot wherever you go. Also take a sweater because sometimes it can get chilly at night, especially in the mountains even in the summer. Jeans and slacks are a must, but take shorts, tanks and swim suits for the beach.

Stomach medicine, although you can get whatever you need at any pharmacy without visiting a doctor.

Digital camera might not be the best way to go. If you bring anything digital make sure the electricity is the same or your camera will blow up! Take a regular camera if possible, with zoom capabilities.

    Pack in your plastic!

  • There's nothing you might need in Lebanon and not be able to buy it on the spot. So just make sure you have enough money on you - plastic is perfect. Beirut is full of ATMs, and you can (surprise! surprise!) even chose the currency in which your account is debited - USD or local (Lebanese pound/lira). The exchange rate is pretty stable - 1:1500. You have the same choice when paying - in the cafe, restaurant, hotel or shop. At the same exchange rate. No cheating! You even get your change in the same currency. No wonder Lebanon is still remembered as the Switzerland of the Middle East.
