Khan as-Saboun: Khan as-Sabon in Tripoli Souks

by MalenaN

In this old Khan as-Saboun soaps have been sold for centuries. Nowdays most of the soap is made in a factory outside Tripoli.I was shown around in the Khan and was smelling on the different lovely soaps. At that time I couldn't buy so much as I was travelling around for a few weeks more. But back in Lebanon I went back to Tripoli just to buy a lot of soaps, some for me and some as presents. There are many different scents, shapes and colours. They all have a bas of olive-oil.They are just wonderful!

Saad couture: best for mens suits and smart casual

by Cham

The shop ranges from mens suits to smart casual clothes for general going out. You'll get a personal service there, ask for Richard he's always honest if something does or doesn't suit you... take his advice as well. get a suit from here or like me buy two, they can be cheaper than western countries and the quality is outstanding between $50-$500 dollars depending on what you want to buy

Khan al-Saboun: Soap, soap and more soap

by TheWanderingCamel

Soap-making was established in the Levant long before Europeans gave up the idea that washing was bad for the health. All the great souqs has soap khans where the product was made and traded. The art of traditional soap-making has returned to Tripoli, with some new innovations to cater for the modern taste for alternative therapies - "aroma therapy soap' is a big seller these days. All the soaps have a pure olive oil base with no chemicals in them and the range of perfumes is astonishing,Khan al-Saboun is both factory and shops but seeif you can go into the back warehouse (through the pillars of soap) where the full range is kept. What else should you buy in Lebanon but cedar oil soap? It may look like a lump of black tar, but its combination of oil and honey together with the fragance of the cedar oil is wonderfully refreshing and invigorating. $3-5

The old souk of Zouk: Local arts and crafts

by asvetlana

The best place to buy souvenirs from Lebanon. Zouk (or souk) literally means a narrow street (sokak as we say in Bulgaria), traditionally a commercial one. What would you think of a village with such a name?We went there after dark (around 8-9 p.m.), and the place looked pretty much deserted, but the old lady who owned the shop must have been watching nearby, because she appeared immediately and opened the shop especially for us. The size of it was comparable with my bathroom at home, but what a treasury of hand-made jewelry, tableclothes and other local craftwork it was. The prices? Very reasonable indeed, and the 20% discount went without saying. Well, you might have to sweat a bit if you don't happen to be accompanied by an old customer, but that's in keeping with the local customs. Souvenirs from amber, table-clothes, embroidered items, glassware (coffee- and tea- sets). Prices...

lebanese cuisine

by spoutnek

First of all it is well known that Mealtime for the Lebanese is a major part of daily life. So the Lebaense cuisine is sooo delicious. Once you are in Lebanon you should buy lebanese sweets and roasteries. The Phoenician ancestors of today's Lebanese were certainly among the earliest winemakers. Today, Lebanon produces wines and with strong personalities, achieving a rare conditions of dry fruitiness, delicacy and robustness. A lot

by call_me_rhia

All inside the Khan there are small shops and large stalls selling olive-oil soaps from the factory on the premises Many types of soap: the traditional ones in square shape with different "flavours" and smells, and round ones, used after the bath, to massage and moistorise your skin. about 4 dollars for a nice box of 4 soaps. 2 dollars for a round massage soap

Haddad: ksara wine

by call_me_rhia

It's a really tiny corner shop selling wine and spirits, as well as salamis, hams, and charcuterie in general, owned by a very nice man who's most willing to give you advice on Lebanese products ksara wine, which is described as "robust dry and fruity, with a strong personality". There's a red and a wine variety - this one is very fruity. You can also buy arak there about 7000-8000 Lebanese pounds for a bottle of red or white ksara

Apparently here there is a real culture of soaps, they have so many kinds, so many parfumes. There are medical soaps, parfumed ones, relaxing ones excetra, the best place we found to buy them was a small soaps factory in Tripoli's souk. Four soaps with a nice pakage may cost abouy8 dollars.
