Beirut
Beirut is the capital of Lebanon and the gateway to the country. When visiting Lebanon, many choose to stay in Beirut and travel around the country during the day. Lebanon is relatively small, and from Beirut, which is centrally located, one could reach all of the country's borders within 2 hours of driving. Beirut also has an amazing nightlife and superb restaurants. Click on the hyperlink to see my Beirut page and travel tips.

Jeitta Grotto
Lower Grotto, Jeitta Lebanon - Lebanon

A must See! A definite attraction not to miss. Two levels of salt caves that are more beautiful than words can describe. The upper level cave is accessible to the public to walk in, Be careful as the level of oxygen decreases as you ascend into the cave along the walkway ((we felt a little light headed by the time we got to the top}
The Lower Grotto is accessible by a small boat, and the ride is short but worth the experience.
The tickets are about $15US which includes a gondola ride up the mountain, admission to the upper grotto, and the boat ride.
NO CAMERAS ALLOWED IN THE GROTTO. A Free and secure storage locker is available to store your camera and camcorder.

    Beirut
    A swan at night, and a real duckling by day: polluted, grey, chaotic... To me Beirut during the day is hell - but visiting it at night turned out very charming. The place de l'etoile, with all it's lights and newly-reconstructed buildings is very suggestive - and so are the roman baths in the vicinity. They are lit up, too. There's a lot of people in the downtown area - posh people too... miniskirts and short dresses - sitting down in a café smoking a nargileh. You feel you're caught in between the west and the middle east - it's a kind of a strange feeling.

    Tyre
    As soon as we arrived, we felt that Tyre was something else.. something different. Tyre (Sour in Arabic) is located in the south of Lebanon, about 20 kilometres far from the Israeli border... Far, but near enugh to be swamped by UN army troops. It surely makes you wonder if this city is entirely safe - within 5 minutes of our arrival something "big had happened": plenty police gathered outside a house, everyone is the neighbourhood came out to the streets - everyone talked, commented... the police left, the UN army guys arrived - sent everyone away - people weree puzzled.. so were we. Then we started our exploration: we enjoyed the colourful souk (the best I found in Lebanon) - and the charming views in the Old Port. And then the wonderful archaeological sites, in particular area three. Imposing, amazingand... right in the middle of a Palestinian refugee camp. You may not recognise it by the look of it, but you surely will from the atmosphere: there's anger, pain and resignation in the air - a very vibrant place.

  • Directions: Highway Beirut towards Tripoli. Turn right towards Ajaltoun after the Nahr el Kalb tunnel and follow the Faraya signs from there.

    Beiteddine
    At the northern edge of the Dar El Harim section is the "hammam", one of the most beautiful in the Arab world. Following a tradition dating to Roman times, these baths comprise a cold room or frigidarium, used for undressing and for relaxation before and after the bath. In this reception room one could discuss politics or literature or listen to the latest rumors. The second section of the baths comprise the lukewarm room, or the tepidarium. This was used for massages and served as a transition between the cold and warm sections. The third part comprised the warm rooms or caldarium. The paving stones of the baths were supported by brick pillars and vault with heated air passing underneath.

    Baalbeck, Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure, can be counted among the wonders of the ancient world. The largest and most noble temples ever built. They are also among the best preserved.
    The Gods worshipped here, the Triad of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, were grafted into the indigenous dieties of Hadad, Atargatis and a young male god of fertility.
