Baalbeck

by raniou

Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure, can be counted among the wonders of the ancient world. These are not only the largest and most noble Roman temples ever built, but they are also among the best preserved.Towering high above the Beqaa plain, their monumental proportions proclaimed the power and wealth of Imperial Rome.

See Baalbek. Don't miss this one. I have been to the ruins in Athens, and the Acropolis was disappointing compared to Baalbek. A must see for any serious Roman history buff. The ancient Roman city of Heliopolis, it once had a three temples, to Jupiter, Venus, and Bacchus. The Bacchus one is almost completely intact, and the Jupiter temple still has 6 of it's 54 columns.

Site seeing, sun bathing, swimming and skiing. The geographic structure of the country allows you to spend time on the beach as well as to enjoy winter sport activities at the same time - just a two to three hour drive away. Make sure to visit during spring, some time around April/May. I enjoyed time on the beach (although it can get pretty cold in the evening and at night) and had to take a detour on my way to visit friends in the mountains because of a closed road due to heavy snow.

JEITA GROTTO: Just beautiful an astonishing natural spectacle. It is a MUST SEE, ;It is around 30km from beirut and not far from Jounieh. It is open from 9:00AM to 6:00pm everyday except Mondays. The tickets are uS$11.00 for adults and US$6.50 for children under 12. Children under 4, are free of charge. You take a cable car ride for few minutes above the river and you arrive at the upper Grotto. The walking tour takes around 45 minutes. There is a sound and picture presentation (not very good) in different languages at different times. and then you take a small train to the lower Grotto where you take the tour by a small boat for 30 minutes. Very beautiful. do not miss it!!!
