Smoke a waterpipe

by Cham

It's common practice in Lebanon to see people with pipes on the corniche, beaches in restaurants etc. When smoking them back home in london, people always look at them funnily like we're smoking bongs or something. The waterpipe, argileh (are-geel-ley) or shisha pipe is a great way to wind down. usually smoked after food as it apparently aids digestion. It's not as bad as regular smoking and you'll realise this when you try it because the water filters out most of the impurities. The smoke is smooth and not harsh like cigarettes (not that i smoke) but even if it's just to try something new give it a go.The pipes can vary in size shape and decoration and a bigger pipe doesn't necessarily mean a better pipe. I have 4 at home all different all with good points and bad points but a little tip is not to buy a pipe to take home from the downtown area as they're expensive and generally not that...

Baalbeck "The Tehmple of Bacchus"

by louny78

The Dedication and Purpose of the Temple:Among the extensive remains at Baalbeck, the Temple of Bacchus is particularly well preserved. It is, in fact, the best preserved Roman temple of this size anywhere. Yet curiously, very little is know about the dedication and purpose of this building. Strictly speaking, we should refer to it as the ‘so-called’ Temple of Bacchus, because the dedication of the building to this joyous god is far from certain. However, there is a prior question: why was this temple built at all?The temple stands in a curious relationship – or better non-relationship – to the great complex of the Temple of Jupiter, commonly called the Acropolis of Baalbeck because of its elevated position. This acropolis, with its overpowering size and lofty location, is a complete entity and certainly must have been connected in some significant way with the town of Baalbeck. The...

Baalbeck The City Of Sun

by louny78

Temple of Jupiter - The Sanctuary of Jupiter Heliopolitan:The compound of the Temple of Jupiter covers an area of about 27 000 square meters (6.5 acres), of which 10 000 square metres (2.5 acres) were open courtyards and stairways. The remaining 17 000 square meters (4 acres) were covered with peristyles, exedras and interior space. In order to chart the development of so large a complex, let us first consider the original nature of the site.At time of the Hellenistic conquest, Baalbek seems to have enjoyed enough fame to attract the attention of the rulers of the day. After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. the area became part of Ptolemies identified the Baal of Baalbek with their sun god and changed the name of the city into Heliopolis. This provided them with a unifying religious center at the eastern end of the empire. The triad of Baal-Aliyan-Anat was equated with...

Jbeil Coast - March 2006

by miso80

Spent a beautiful evening on the coast of Byblos this Sunday. Although the ancient byblos souk was closed, and most of the streets were empty. Walking down the streets of jbeil, watching the little boats off of the port, watching the sun set on the ruins and drown into the sea..was breath-taking.One of my friends' relatives owns a house and a piece of land right on the coast of byblos (right next to Edde sands)..and they have an excellent view of the ruins, which are warmly lit at night - so, we managed to be up-close-and-personal to all of Byblos's beautiful spots.

Baalbeck Festival

by miso80

For the past 50 years, the ancient Baalbeck ruins have hosted musiciens and artists from around the world each summer to fill the nights with life and music. This festival takes place in July and August of each year, and each year they welcome a different array of artists. This year (2006) the stage will be set up between the temples of Jupiter and Bacchus, and this will make room for more than 2000 spectators. Check out the site for the current year's program...Although it might take you a couple of hours to get to Baalbeck from Beirut..you're bound to love this journey ..trust me I go there 2-3 times each summer ;-)

Beiteddine Festivals

by miso80

This is a yearly even that takes place during July-August. One of the most beautiful palaces in Lebanon hosts the greatest artists in the arab region and worldwide, and under the stars you can enjoy an enchanting setting and listen to your favorite artists.I've been to the beiteddine festival several times..and the charm keeps me going back for more. One reason I would recommend that people visit Lebanon during the summer is because of these festivals..cause it is truly an experience that should not be missed.Note that, in order to get to beiteddine you can choose to go by buses that are provided by the organizers of the festival..so getting there doesn't have to be too difficult.

Skiiing & Tanning in Faraya

by miso80

Be it skiing, snowboarding or simply playing in the snow...Faraya is where all snow lovers should be! This is Lebanon's largest ski resort where the slopes can actually get crowded. There are six advanced slopes and the ski station. The Faraya Mzaar offers more choice for serious skiers than anywhere else in Lebanon. There also a few cross country skiing trails. The Mzaar slopes are some of the best equipped and maintained of Lebanon's resorts. There are 7 lifts including 4 chairlifts which connect trails ranging from beginners to advanced. If you are visiting Lebanon this winter, this is an ideal place for you to spend you weekend. There are chalets, hotels, ski shops, restaurants and other facilities, that make the day-time and night-time full of good times.Altitude = 1850 metersp.s. what also makes it so special is the beautiful weather...the temperature is so moderate, the sun is...

Broummana

by MalenaN

Broummana is situated about 21 km from Beirut, in the mountains above the capital. It is a popular place to visit in summer when it is hot and humid in Beirut, but cooler and fresher air up in Broummana. Especially during the weekends a lot of people come here from Beirut. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants with great views, hotels and also some discos. I went to Broummana with bus from Abdallah el Yafi Avenue (near the National Museum) in Beirut. The ticket was 750 LL. The problem was that it is not easy to know when you reach Broummana as it is built all way from Beirut. It turned out we had passed Broummana before I asked where to get off (I suspected that), so the bus driver stopped and I changed to a bus going in the other direction.Leaving Broummana I walked several kilometres to Beit Mary. It was a pleasant walk and luckily very few cars on the road, as it was not weekend.

Ride a boat inside the caves!

by marimar_72

The tour through Jeita Cavern includes a boat ride through the lower galleries, the visit to the upper galleries is done on foot and includes a film presentation. The lower level is full of the noise of the subterranean river Nahr el Kalb (Dog River). visitors glide deeper into the cave during the 600 Meter boat ride on a lake formed by the river. Make sure before going there to know if it`s opened for visitors, cause it`s not open all year round.Trust me the place will stun you:D
