Trablous (Tripoli)

by MalenaN

Trablous is the second largest city in Lebanon and it is situated by the coast 85 km north of Beirut. In Trablous there is the old city with the souq and fortress, the modern city with broad avenues and shopping malls and the area Al-Mina by the sea.First arriving in Trablous I wanted to visit Khan as-Saboun, but walking the narrow streets of the souq I did not find the right way. I asked a woman for the way and she walked with me the right way all way to the khan (very kind of her). The souq is a lively place with many shops. There are different areas where you can buy gold, metalwork, cloths, fruits etc. Walking around in the old town you will see many old buildings like hammams, madrassas, mosques and khans.Al-Mina is the port area of Trablous. Here it is nice to walk along the Cornish, breath the sea air and watch the boats. From here you can take a boat ride to one of the small...

BEITEDDINE

by sarrahh

V I S I T I N G T H E P A L A C E Dar El Baraniyyeh, The outer section of the Palace. On the approach to the palace a large parking area offers some of the best views of the buildings and grounds. The main entrance leads to a 107x45 meter courtyard, Al-Midan, where horsemen, courtiers and visitors used to meet for various gatherings. From here, too, the Emir would leave with his retinue in solemn procession, either for war or for the hunt. On the ground floor is a museum, inaugurated on May 1, 1991. Through photographs, documents and manuscripts, it tells the life story of Kamal Jumblatt, member of Parliament, cabinet minister and Druze leader. Along the right side of this court is a two-story wing, Al-Madafa, which was once used for receiving guests. it was the custom that anyone of rank would keep open house for passerby and that a visitor would not be asked for his identity or the...

Sea Castle, Sidon

by reezal

Sidon south of Beirut...take bus from Charles Helou Station in Beirut. Abt 30min to 1hour bus ride..Sitting on a little island 80m off the coast of Sidon is the famous sea castle. There was originally a Phoenician temple on this site. Built by the Crusaders in the early 13th century, the sea castle is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Part of the causeway used to be made of wood in order for the Crusaders to remove these pieces in times of attack. Today, the causeway is made of stone and concrete following reconstruction in 1936. The castle was taken by the Mamluks in 1291 and largely destroyed. However, it was later rebuilt by Fakhreddine. Also visit Qalaat El Muizz (the Castle of St. Louis), the Temple of Eshmoun, Soap Museum(Haret Audi, El Moutran Street, Sidon), Sidon souk(near sea castle-shopping) and the old Egyptian port.

Beirut - times have changed

by TheWanderingCamel

The images of a war-torn city are laid to rest by a visit to Beirut. Yes, there is still much reconstruction and restoration to be done, and all is not entirely well between the different communities; truce rather than peace prevails, but the mood is positive, and there is a lot to enjoy on a visit here. The pleasures of time spent in Beirut are more those of modern city life - restaurants, shopping, people-watching - but there is an excellent museum for the antiquarians and plenty of evidence of the city's more recent past and the will to move on which brings a new perspective to the things you know -or thought you knew - about the city.Look around and you will see the layers of the past and the face of the future. It's all here in this photo -Roman columns, war damage, restoration and new building, side by side - that's Beirut.
