  • Corniche

One of the best things to do in Sur during the winter season is to go for a walk down on the revamped waterfront that the government is finally putting some money into. It is one of the only places I know of that you can walk around in the evening and view the Arabian Sea and stars by yourself. It is an awesome feeling to listen and see the Arabian...

  • The Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum in Sur is on the left of the main strip into Sur. It is just after the fort, opposite the Shell station and located in the Al Aruba sports complex. You will probably need to go to the office on the far side of the entrance to the car park and ask for the caretaker to open up. It is not big but has a number of very old photos of...

The beach of the Turtle Beach Resort at Ras Al Hadd bay is very beautiful, and the water is very calm for swimming and other sea activities because it is protected by the rocks of the bay. To use this reach, you have to stay at the Turtle Beach Resort (see my VT accomodations tip)

The beach at Ras Al Jinz is very nice with very few tourists. You can see some locals having a picnic and enjoying the beach, some seagulls and turtles coming ashore for nesting. It is good to spent sometime to enjoy this beach.

There is a big and shallow bay surrounding Sur and you will notice many soccer goal posts sticking out of the water. During low tide, all the water will be gone and the locals will actually play soccer here. Very interesting indeed !

  • The ancient watch towers of Sur

There are many watch towers in Oman surrounding the many forts, but the watch towers of Sur are interesting because of thier close proximity to the sea, and the two towers are quite close to one another.

The old part of Sur is located in the south of this coastal town and consists of traditional mud buildings and a prominent lighthouse guarding the water channel entering Sur. It is worth a visit if you have sufficient time here.

Sur Off The Beaten Path

  • Remains of old British runway

There is a remains of an old British runway at the town of Ras Al Hadd. It is for a British airbase here during World War 2 where planes took off for the African campaign. The airbase is no longer around and you can hardly notice the runway. Unfortunately I did not take a photograph of the runway but would share with you a nice photograph of the...
