srhussaini's General Tip

by srhussaini

The Sultanate of Oman, occupying the south-eastern section of the Arabian Peninsula, is a culturally rich country with some of the most magnificent natural scenery in the world. Its long history and ancient traditions are strengths that have underpinned its modern development guided by its Government, which is led by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Muttrah souk is a must especially for those that like a good barter, the silver bit is my favorite part and it is very cheap The thing I miss most is the people and just the general laid back way of life, could be a bit annoying if you want to get anything done but hey

by ersatz

Buy some antique Silver Jewellery. In the old days, silver St.Teresa talers from Austria were commonly used as payment for Frankincense exported to Europe so they entered as a currency in Oman, but were also used to fashion necklaces, or melted down into other forms of jewellery. Beware the modern copies which have a low silver content. They can be recognised by their bright finish, but may be artificially aged and passed off as antiques at high prices .

by DesertRat

Oman is -- I think -- the single most interesting country in the Arabian Gulf. Yemen would be its only competition in the region, for Oman has everything: scenery, local population in ethnic dress, superb beaches and diving, not to mention more rock climbing opportunities than almost anywhere. If I had a short term visitor and could take him/her to only one place, it would surely be a 4x4 trip up to the top of Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain (ca. 3,000 m). Omanis out in the Interior. If you're in trouble -- a car breakdown or something -- the first car to pass will stop and lend assistance, no questions asked and no fee required. Or if you're walking through a village, you're likely to be invited in for refreshments in someone's home.

Drive 4-wheel through the route that takes you to 'Tiwi' and 'SUR' and along the coast. The drive is absloutely fantastic The courteous people. They stop while driving to let pedestrians walk across busy shopping areas (Something you'll only dreamn about in India - where I live...)
