The beautiful mosque, Masjid al-Khor, is a modern structure in Old Muscat. It is one of Oman's many colourful mosques, built in a style that draws on Arab, Persian and Indian architectural styles. Here, the use of blue onion-shaped domes and pointed arches is perhaps more influenced by Persia. Al-Khor Mosque is located just below Mirani Fort.

Officially called Masjid al-Rasool al-A'tham (mosque of the great prophet), al-Lawatiya Mosque as it is known, dominates the skyline of Matrah. Although it is of a modern construction, it is still faithful to traditional Islamic architecture. Its mosaic-covered onion dome and blue minaret make it one of the more beautiful mosques in town. It is located on the scenic Matrah Corniche.

Shatti el-Qurm is a beachside neighbourhood in Greater Muscat. It is the most expensive neighbourhood to live in and contains numerous embassies and diplomatic residences. Its villas and streets are large and perfectly maintained. The area contains some of the city's most expensive shopping as well as its luxurious resort-hotels such as the Grand Hyatt. The beaches along Shatti el-Qurm are beautiful.

  • Scenic Matrah Corniche - Muscat
    Scenic Matrah Corniche
    by MM212, 4 more photos
With chocolate-coloured rugged mountains diving into the sea and a 16th century Portuguese Fort as a backdrop against white washed low lying buildings, the Matrah Corniche is undoubtedly the most scenic among the cities of the Gulf. The Corniche curves and meanders along the bay of Matrah with traditional dhows and large tankers stationed in its deep anchorage harbour. When the weather is clement in the cooler months, a long stroll down the Matrah Corniche is a must, and if one gets tired there are numerous golden-domed pavilions along the way for one to rest. The best time for such a stroll is an hour or two before sunset as the shadows cast against the zigzag of mountains enhance the features.

  • The link below gives a good synopsis of each major Museum in the general Muscat and Matrah area. The information includes opening hours, prices, addresses, etc.

The Historical Association of Oman has a strong supporting force for the preservation and presentation of local history and culture. The locations referenced here are endorsed by the HAO, but there are also lectures, seminars, field trips, etc.

  • Al Jalali Fort - Muscat
    Al Jalali Fort
    by MM212
Guarding the Muscat bay at the eastern end, Al Jalali Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1587 and named Forte de Sćo Joćo (i.e., Saint John's Fort). Its Arabic name is said to derive from the Portuguese "Joćo". Like the Mirani Fort at the opposite end of the bay, Al Jalali's purpose was to protect Portuguese ships against the threat of attack, particularly by the Ottomans and Persians. The fortress stands prominently on the top of a rocky hill commanding unobstructed views over the bay and old Muscat. The fort was captured by the Omanis from the Portuguese in 1649 and was used for defensive purposes thereafter. It underwent some restorations and expansions over the years until it was turned into a prison. It is now no longer in use, but has undergone extensive restoration in recent years. Unfortunately, it is not open to visitors either.

    al Alam Palace
    by MM212, 2 more photos
Built in 1972 as the Sultan's Palace, al Alam Palace is more symbolic than an actual residence. It is said that the Sultan lives elsewhere in Muscat, so this palace is reserved for ceremonies. Visits are not permitted, but the exterior is quite striking. Although it has a hint of Islamic architecture, its design is unlike any style. For a country where all buildings and houses are essentially painted white, this palace might be the only multi-coloured house. The palace is located in the heart of the actual town of Muscat, not too far from the bay.

    Zawawi Mosque in al-Khuwayr
    by MM212, 1 more photos
Al-Khuwayr is a modern neighbourhood of Greater Muscat located between the airport and the historic towns of Matrah and Muscat. Its physical appearance is closer to other Gulf cities, with its mostly non-descriptive buildings and flat landscape. It contains a number of businesses and commercial centres, but its most prized monument is perhaps the Zawawi Mosque (see photograph). It is considered one of the most beautiful in Muscat and provides a great photo opportunity for photographers.

Built in 1986, the Asma bint Alawi Mosque is the main mosque in Madinat al-Ilam (Information City, sometimes spelt al-A'alam). Like other mosques in Greater Muscat, Alawi Mosque is beautiful and unique. It has an ornate golden onion-shaped dome and a clock tower for a minaret! The mosque is visible from the main motorway connecting the airport to Old Muscat. Information City is just another neighbourhood in Greater Muscat and named so because it contains the Ministry of Information and the Oman Radio and Television Studios.
