Misfah village

by sachara

From the plateau we went another 500 M to the Misfah village by road. The best thing to do is to go by feet. The small alleys the centre of the mountainvillage are only reachable by feet. In the centre of the village with houses, built of natural stone, it is forbidden to take pictures. We decided not to enter the village, because of lack of time and because of we felt a bit like intruders.Around the village we saw some terraces, irrigated by the aflaj.

Area of al-Hamra, palmeraie Misfah

by sachara

The plateau with the spectacular view at the village of Misfah was a nice area for a picknick and a rest. So here we took our lunch, enjoying the beautifull view at the palmeraie, just down under the Misfah village and the rough and barren mountains around.Between the rocks we tried to descend to the palmeraie, but there was not a suitable way to do that.

Misfah in the surrounding landscape.

by sachara

From Al-Hamra is a small unpaved road leading into the mountains, to the mountainvillage Misfah. We couldn't find this road, so a boy on a bike showed us the way up. After about 7 KMs we reached a plateau with some buildings, a playground and some sunshelters. From here we had the most beautifull view at the village of Misfah. It looked like the houses of Misfah are hanging at the steep mountainslope.

Area al Hamra

by sachara

About 30 KM west of Nizwa before reaching Bahla is a road to the right to al Hamra and Misfah. Then it's still another 16 KM to Al Hamra.Al Hamra has a modern part of the town and a old part. The old part is very scenic with old mud houses. There is an old souq in a traditonal complex of clay, straw and palmleaves, the alleys are covered and the complex can be closed by doors. Most old shops are closed now , because the shopkeepers moved to the the mainstreet in new al Hamra for more customers.

Wahiba Sand

At east of Oman near to Bdyaih, Drive to Wahiba Sands. Set up the camp and enjoy a BBQ. Camels and thousand of stars make you feel like taking part in an Arabian tale. The next morning try to l visit the seaside town of Sur and its historic dhow yards. Drive to Kalhat (Mariams Grave), Wadi Shab with clear pools to swim and a hidden cave to dive in.

On my birthday, we went to to the turtle beach...it was a full moon and around 10 o'clock, these huge turtles came out of the water. It was great to see!!! On the pic, you can see me watching a turtle; you had to be real quiet, otherwise they would go back to the sea...The dog was a bit confused!! LOL

The Green Mountain - a 4 wheeeling adventure.

by Faiza-Ifrah

Jebel Alakhdar (The Green Mountain) is a good off the beaten path mountanous spot. The track to the top is unmettaled and 4 wheel drives are a must. The climb is steep and the the track is all along deep ravines. To reach to Jebel Alakhdar from Muscat, take the Oman-UAE highway towards Suhar and head for Nizwah by turning left at 16 km roundabout. Take the sign-posted road some 10kms short of Nizwah to Alakhdar. Don't forget to see the fort at the corner of this junction. Here, Rayyan and Wali are posing for the pix during our long drive towards Nizwah-Alakhdar junction.

During the course of its history, Oman has been known as Magan, Mazoon and Oman. According to evidence found in cuneiform writing, the name Magan was connected with the ancient shipping and copper smelting industries. The Mazoon name was connected with the country's prolific freshwater resources, whilst the name Oman stems from the migration of Arabic tribes from a place called Oman in Yemen
