Omani musts

by JohnniOmani

Carry a mid range backpack because you can fit these size bags in baiza buses meaning you will save a lot on transportation costs. Women should have a scarf for the conservative areas, cargo pants that zip away are perfect for men(should be mid calf in length). Women should wear shirts past their elbows and past their calf despite what people tell you. Dont judge the dress code by the ignorant British oil workers in Muscat. You can get almost anything in Muscat but Visine( clears red eyes doesnt exist) and contact solution is very very expensive so bring some extra bottles. Photo equipment is available everywhere. A good tent and sleeping bag are mandatory in this country because you can camp almost anywher e you desire. Insect repellent is hard to come by so buy some before you come to this country as well as getting a good sleeping bag due to cold nights during the winter. Sun...

Fly Swatter

by Ali&Steve

One thing Oman is not short of is flies. Even out in the driest desert, an attempt at a nice picnic can be thwarted by their attention. The fly swat can be treated like an executive toy when sunbathing by simply waving it around to exercise the wrists. Then, of course, there is the "thrill of the kill" and there will be plenty!Steve

Backpacks and trolley bags. In summer (April-October): light cotton everywhere, except in the western hilly Salalah town for which light jackets and sweaters may be added. In winters (November-March), light jackets and sweaters would be needed even in the plains, especially during evenings. Raincoats are necessary in Salalah region during the monsoons (mid-June to end-August). Washrooms in Oman have water showers instead of French Biddets. Take washrooms tissue rolls, wet hand and face paper wipes. A medical aid box comes in handy everywhere, especially during off the road adventures say by this group of Pakistani and Omani women and children trekkers being led by my son Rayyan. Fill the box with all sorts of painkillers, medicine for nausea, upset stomachs, etc., gauzes, adhesive bandages and insect repellents. Any equipment may be taken. At some hotels and resorts the equipment has...

Are there any safety precautions I should take? You will be visiting one of the hottest countries in the world. Consequently, when you go outdoors, always make sure that you are wearing a high protection sunscreen which should be re-applied regularly (this can be purchased in any of the local supermarkets). If you are travelling in remote areas, make sure that you carry large supplies of water, as dehydration can occur . When travelling through wadis or the desert, it is wise to go in a group or with a tour guide, in case of car trouble, and always let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return.
