The Barber Shop Experience

by PierreZA

If you have visited India, North Africa or Turkey you would be familiar with the barber shops. It is a very relaxing experience. You will find plenty Barber Shops in the Ruwi Souq area and in Mutrah in the area as you exit the souq (at the inland side). To have a shave done would cost between OMR 0.5 - 1.5It is a very local affair, and part of every day life for Omani men.

Ruwi

by PierreZA

It seems that not many tourists consider Ruwi as a tourist area. It is actually worth spending some time here. There are good restaurants, the Ruwi Souq, many Barber Shops, Auyervedic Clinics etc. The place comes alive at night. Most shops are closed betwen 12 noon and 4pm, so it is much better to visit Ruwi late afternoon and evening. There are some good take-away foodshops wich sells excellent schwarmas. It does remind one a lot of India, but there is a definite Arabic influence.

Fish Market

by PierreZA

The fish market in Muttrah is worth getting up for early morning. There are plenty photo oppurtunities. Locals are very friendly and are willing to show you around.Best is to go early morning, when most fisherman deliver their catch. The fish market is located at the harbour, opposite the Marine Hotel.

boat ride

by norain

I took a boat ride from the beach near bandah jissah. And of course you will see the famous rock arch. And the boat can stop at the beach wherever you like and they will return to pick you up at your time.

Sawadi beach

by norain

Here you can enjoy the beach and the islands. There are boats to take you to the islands. When the sea level gets down you can walk to a watchtower on one of the islands. There is an abundance of shells on the beach and cars are allowed to drive on the beach, wow!

Nakhal Fort

by norain

Nakhal fort is nice to visit. There are many rooms such as pray room, store room, kitchen, meetign room, room for governor, room for weapon, winter room, etc. There are excellent views from the watch towers. The entrance fee is 0.5 OR.

Learning Arabic

by JohnniOmani

One of the best ways to learn Arabic in Oman (and for free) is to sit down at a cafe and chat with the local Omani men (obviously for foreign men but women can do it by visiting the local univ or colleges) and they are happy to converse. This is how I learned Arabic and you will not only learn the language but you may end up meeting some great friends that you will keep in touch with for the rest of your life. It was one of my fav things to do in Oman and my memories are beyond words.

Al Sawadi

by JohnniOmani

This place has to be one of my true favorites in the country. It is a classy beach resort where tourists and expats can get away from the Islamic everyday life and relax by a beach with a drink or book in your hand. You can swim in the sea, play anything from beach volleyball to badminton to using the gym. You can play basketball, rent sea scooters, drink and eat at the 3 local pubs on site or camp on the beach (using their facilites) Winter offers some great discounts and this place is the absolute perfect place to get away from it all. The rates vary from season to season ranging from 15 rials a person per night to 25 rials a person per night but the camping huts on the beach (10 rials a person per night) is dynamite. You gotta love the 20$ buffet because it is incredible and non muslims can even get pork etc ! Overall, I love the place! I copied the most recent information as of...

Movies!

by JohnniOmani

I had to find ways to beat the heat in Muscat and other places during the spring and summer and this cinema is one of the best in the country. You can enjoy this cinema anyday of the week and it is one par with any cinema in a Western country. The movies are in English and they are usually up to date. It is very popular with expats and locals during the hot summer days. Any daytime show costs 2.5 omani rials. Great budget option!

Watch the turtles nest.....

by scaffas

Well the rare and big green turtles nest at the beaches in Ras Al Hadd and Ras Al Junayz. It is usually at night time and before the sunrise. make sure you carry your torch with you. You can see the turtles come to the shore and dig a pit. You can see the whole process i one night and i got the chance to see a turtle lay around 100 eggs at one time. It was priceless, i advice tourists to visit it as the turtles are slowly getting extinct.
