Muscat, Capital of Oman

by victorwkf

The port city of Muscat is the capital of Oman, and there are lots of things to see and do in this city. Muscat remains a very traditional city despite modernisation, and you can find some of the most authentic souqs (markets) in Muscat, especially the famous Mutrah Souq and the fish souq. Other attractions include the famous Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, many interesting museums, mutrah cornicle, beautiful beaches etc. Details & photos of Muscat are at my VT Muscat page and VT Mintaqat Masqat page.

Picnics with locals

by JohnniOmani

One of the best experiences you can have in Oman is sitting down with some locals and enjoying some food and drinks(non alcoholic of course). If you are lucky to find someone who speaks English well you are in for a true delight as Omanis stop at nothing to be polite to their visitors. Omanis will give you enough food for two lifetimes and they will even explain the culture and traditions to you if you ask. Overall, sitting with Omanis is a blast!

BarberShop

by JohnniOmani

My favorite thing to do in Oman is to get a shave by the Indian and Bangali men. They are absolute wizards and have amazing skills especially with the straight blade. The whole process takes about 45 minutes and it is heaven. For $3 US it is an amazing deal!! Try it and you will love it!!

Snorkelling and Diving

by JohnniOmani

There are some excellent snorkelling and diving in Oman, and the untouched coastline is perfect for anyone wanting peace and quiet. Diving courses are given at the Al Sawadi Beach Resort as well as Blue Zone. Omans waters are full of life!

Hiking, Rock Climbing and Caving

by JohnniOmani

All of these activities are becoming more and more popular in Oman. Oman has some amazing caves which many have never been explored. With a pair of boots, sun hat and water Oman will not dissappoint you. My personal favorite is hiking in the Hajaar Mountains.

Classical Music

by JohnniOmani

Sultan Qaboos is a huge fan of music and there are regular displays of classical music by the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra at the Al Bustan Palace. There are different styles of music including my favorite (bagpipes). Overall, good fun.

Wadi Shab & Wadi Tiwi

by victorwkf

These 2 beautiful wadis (rivers) are located near to the coastal town of Tiwi along the coastal journey from Muscat to Sur and a must visit for their sheer beauty. You can take a leisure walk or swim in these wadis, or even take a 2-3 day guide trekking adventure which will bring you deep into the valleys. More information & photos are at my VT Tiwi page.

The Arabian Desert

by traveldave

Oman is located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, and most of its territory is covered by the Arabian Desert. The Arabian Desert in turn is part of the Saharo-Arabian Desert, the most extensive arid region in the world. Many people imagine sand dunes when they think of the Arabian Desert. Although there are some sand dunes in the western part of the country, most of Oman's desert consists of rugged mountains and hills, deep valleys (or wadis), flood plains and alluviums, coastal scrub, salt flats, and salt marshes.Travelers to Oman can visit the desert, usually with a tour company specializing in off-road adventures or sand-skiing. I visited most of the desert habitats while searching for birds.

Enjoy a dhow trip in the fjords of Musandam

by markolb

When in Khasab, don't miss a dhow cruise in the Khor Sham, which is a huge fjord at the musandam peninsula. These cruises are offered as half (9 to 1) or full (9 to 4) day trips and include drinks, fruit and lunch and rental of snorkelling gear. Prices are typically 15 OR (150 Dhs) for half day and 20 OR (200 Dhs) for a full day trip. The trips can be most conveniently arranged in the hotels.During the trip often groups of dolphins can be watched. A stop at telegraph island is made for snorkelling. Don't expect to much from this. There are a few fish around, but it is far from being spectacular. It is a very relaxing way to spend your day in the wonderful fjords of Musandam.
