Bull Fighting

by Ali&Steve

Now! Before the animal rights campaigners start chipping in; this is not bull fighting Spanish style pitting man against beast to the death. It is a push and shove contest between two bulls until either one gives up or the judges select a winner. It's usually short and sweet if the bulls play ball and it takes numerous matches to drag a meeting out for a couple of hours. Thankfully, there's no shortage of bulls as they arrive by the truck and van load. Its a very 'local' occasion and peculiar to the Indian Ocean coast of Arabia. I can't confess to know how these things are organised or judged; they just make a very interesting local spectacle. Meetings take place generally on a Friday afternoon at 16.00 between October and April. There's no adverts so it's by word of mouth that one finds whether an event is actually taking place on a given Friday.

Diving in Oman!

by SalsaNikki

As well as visiting Oman by land it's a place well worth visiting underwater too!!!!We made four dives with Bluzone diving and although the visibility wasn't great, there was plenty to see. Plenty of brightly coloured fish and corals, moray eels and turtles!Diving outfit was very professional, the dive guides were good, and safety standards were high.

When you are travelling in Oman, there is a good chance you will see the speeding camels ! Yes, they are actually camels behind lorries being ferried from one place to another ! You might also see speeding goats (ha ha).

The round-abouts in Oman

by victorwkf

There are many traffic round-abouts in Oman, especially outside Muscat. Therefore, you hardly see any traffic lights and round-abouts can work efficiently in Oman because there are not many vehicles and traffic jams. In order to make the round-about interesting, some of them have interesting structures in the middle, such as the one in the photo with the huge traditional frankincense burner.

Bimmah Sinkhole

by victorwkf

The Bimmah Sinkhole is located on the coastal road from Muscat to Sur, and is a must visit because of its sheer natural beauty. The colours of the water is simply fantastic, and you can even swim in the crystal clear water or camp next to it. More photographs & information are at my VT Qalhat page.

Old mosque at the town of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali

by victorwkf

When you are passing by the town of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali on the way from Wahiba Sands to Ras Al Jinz, you have to pay a visit to the famous old mosque. As you can see from the photograph, this mosque has many minarets unlike a typical mosque which has only one minaret. The shape and architecture are also unique and this is one of the few remaining old mosques in Oman. Unfortunately, non-muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque.

The town of Sinaw

by victorwkf

The town of Sinaw is a must visit if you are driving from Nizwa (or surroundings) or the Wahiba Sands. This town is very famous for its souq (market) which is very traditional with people in their traditional costumes and everything here is really exciting and interesting. Apparently, the souq is mainly for the Bedouins (nomads of Arabia) to buy their food and other stuff before returning to their desert home, which is the nearby Wahiba Sands. They even sell camels and goats here! More photographs of Sinaw are at my travelogue section of this VT webpage.

The ruins at Qalhat

by victorwkf

The ruins at Qalhat along the coastal road between Muscat and Sur is worth visiting, especially for the Bibi Mariam's tomb and the beautiful coastal scenery. However, you need a 4 wheel drive to reach this place but they are in the process of constructing a good road. More information & photographs are at my VT Qalhat page.

Wadi Bani Khalid

by victorwkf

The Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the most beautiful wadis (rivers) in Oman which is filled with water all year around unlike most of the dry wadis in Arabia. The scenery is fantastic and it is something like an oasis in a dry surrounding. Tourism is coming and they are building a park next to this wadi, so you should come and see it before it becomes too touristy. More photographs of Wadi Bani Khalid are at the travelogue section of this VT webpage.

Wahiba Sands

by victorwkf

The Wahiba Sands is a relatively huge desert located south of Muscat and is a good place to visit if you want to experience a desert environment and the life of the Bedouins (nomads of Arabia). There are a few tourist camps in Wahiba Sands where you can stay and try out some of the activities, including desert adventure driving, desert skiing, trekking, cultural performances etc. The sunrise & sunset are very beautiful here. More photographs of Wahiba Sand are at my travelogue section of this VT webpage.
