Ras Al Jinz: Most eastern point of Arabia

by victorwkf

Ras Al Jinz is the most eastern point of the Arabia Peninsula, and it has some really wonderful beaches without the crowds ! Also, this place is famous for the many turtles which come to the beach to nest every year, and you can actually view the turtles at night on a guided tour at a protected location on the beach. More information & photos are at my VT Sur page.

The magnificent Hajar Mountains

by victorwkf

The Hajar Mountains dominate northern Oman which stretches all the way to the Musandam Peninsula, gateway to the Persian Gulf. There mountains are very old, rugged, beautiful and go up to 3000 over metres above sea level. They are divided into the Western Hajar Mountains and Eastern Hajar Mountains. There are many beautiful villages among the mountains, as well as deep gorges, rivers, valleys etc. Two famous landmarks here are the Jebel Akhdar (green mountain) and Jebel Shams (mountain of the sun). More information & photos of the Hajar Mountains are at my VT Al Hajar Al Gharbi page which should be fully ready by early March 2005.

Bahla - A town famous for pottery & its fort

by victorwkf

Bahla is a small town in the mountainous region of Oman near to the town of Nizwa. This town is famous for its beautiful fort (which is a UNESCO heritage site) as well as for its traditional pottery makers (not many are left now). There is also a nice mosque near the town. More information & photographs are at my VT Bahla page. Please note that the Bahla Fort is still under renovation during Jan 2005 when I visited the place, but I am not sure when it will be ready.

Nizwa - Former capital of Oman

by victorwkf

The town of Nizwa in the mountainous interior of Oman was once the capital of Oman before the country was united and the capital was moved to Muscat because of its location as an important port. Attractions in Mizwa include the famous Nizwa fort, mosque and the various souqs (markets) in the town centre. Nizwa is also the base to explore famous nearby places include Jabrin, Bahla, Misfat, Al Hamra, Tanuf, Hotta Caves, the Western Hajar Mountains etc. More information & photographs are at my VT Nizwa page which should be completed by early March 2005.

Jabrin Fort

by victorwkf

There are about 500 over forts in Oman, and the biggest and most beautiful must be the fort located at the town of Jabrin. In fact, this is more like a castle and is situated in a flat plain surrounded by mountains. This fort is also famous for its beautiful wooden ceiling art. More information & photographs of Jabrin Fort are at my VT Jabrin page.

This is one of the grandest mosque in Arabia and is definitely a must see when you are in Oman. The beautiful architecture is simply amazing, both exterior and interior. It only opens from about 9-11am on all days except Fridays, and is the only mosque is Oman which non-muslims are allowed to enter. For more information & photos of this mosque, please visit my VT Muscat page.

The "Oman Today" Magazine

by victorwkf

"Oman Today" is Oman's leading adventure, sports, motoring and lifestyle magazine (published monthly). It is available for 1 Omani Rial and contains very good information on places to see, important contacts and other valuable information such as car breakdown services, hotels, medical centres, tour operators, sports facilities etc. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention it has a good section on where to have good food in Oman.

Sultan Qaboos, ruler of Oman

by victorwkf

Sultan Qaboos is the ruler of the Sultanate of Oman and you can see his photographs and portraits in many places, as expected. Before Sultan Qaboos came into power in 1970, Oman was very much an isolated and hermit country which do not welcome visitors. Sultan Qaboos changed all that, plus he made Oman into a modern city with good quality of life. Important stuff like education, good roads etc where put in place. Also, women in Oman can go to school, drive vehicles, work, go shopping etc. The Omanis respected the Sultan very much due to his wise ruling of the country.
