Nahal Kalya Things to Do

  • Floating at the Dead Sea

Floating along the Dead Sea is the most popular activity to do for the Tourists and Christian Pilgrims that goes to the Nahal Kalya Public Beach. The Dead Sea seawater has a density of 1.240 kg/L, which makes swimming similar to floating. Objects in water stop sinking when they displace a mass of water equal to their body mass. In unsalted water,...

This will be included in my nightlife tips as Bars are usually nightime activities. The Kalia Beach Bar, located near the shores of the Northern Dead Sea in Nahal Kalya (across the Mount Nebo lookout in Jordan if you have a really powerful optical zoom camera to see it) is touted to be the World's Lowest Bar as it sits 418 meters (1,380 feet) below sea level, just 5 meters (18 feet) above the dead sea. The bar is open from 8:00 am up to 8:00 pm where you can have beers, cocktails, mocktails, alcopops, regular drinks, snacks and meals.

unfortunately i did not have time to order and drink at this bar as we have a really tight schedule but if I can go back to the place, then I would definitely order brewskies here.

    Dress Code: casual!

you can be in your bikini and swimming attire here as this is a beach, but being in your birthday suit is not allowed!

most of the International tourists and Christian Pilgrims going to Kalia to swim at the Kalia Public Beach come from Jerusalem, which is the main base for the multi day tours and pilgrimage of Central and Southern Israel and if you are then proceeding to Egypt for the remainder of your pilgrmage, a stop to swim at the dead sea via the Kalia Beach is part of the experience and the big tour buses or private vans will drop you off here and the drive from jerusalem to Nahal Kalya is about 40 minutes and 30 kilometers east of jerusalem, then after an hour of bathing, will proceed to Qumran and then to Eliat and cross into Egypt.

being a hypersaline lake with at least 33% salinity for the Northern Dead Sea and 34 % for the Southern Dead Sea, swimming at the Dead Sea is not your usual thing as the hypersalinity will hurt your tongue if you accidentally ingest water, moreso if the water will seep into your eyelids and people with heart conditions are not allowed to swim in the dead sea as ingesting a lot of the hypersaline water might lead to heart attack due to the high salt content. also regular free style swimming or breast stroke swimming is not allowed as there is more bouyancy of the lake which means if you are lying face down at the lake, you will be having a hard time pushing your face up above the water (and that is why you can float on your back at the lake

Being budget friendly does not necessarily mean cutting corners and here at Kalia Public Beach, they have various tables and chairs at several areas for groups who want to have a picnic or put their belongings while they swim at the beach. the area also has a life guard house and life guards available at all times for guests. they have public showers near the beach where you can remove all the dead sea mud and the hypersaline water from your body and from your waterproofed camera before going to the public bathrooms and changing rooms, which are also top notched and the showers are cold.
