Favorite thing: In Doha there is a small port where you can catch boats out to an island in the bay, the site of an amusement park. Not too many fishing vessels are still around, but there are a few of them too. This photo shows one of them cruising across the bay in front of yet another set of cranes, putting up yet more shiny new high-rises along the shore.

Favorite thing: The Doha landscape is pure desert, flat as a pancake and with maybe one tiny, scrubby bush every fifty meters or so to break up the sand and rocks. It's a good thing this city is located right on the sea, otherwise there would be nothing whatsoever to look at!

Favorite thing: Although there's plenty of open space in Doha for new construction, the theme these days is as much about tearing down as it is about building up. Many of the older buildings--even if they're not all that old--are in the process of being demolished to make way for the shiny new structures going up all over town.

Favorite thing: I don't think I've ever seen as many simultaneously operating construction sites in one place. Doha in 2005 is exploding, and everywhere you look, another office tower, shopping center, residential subdivision, sports arena, bridge, road, or hotel is going up.

Fondest memory: I was very reluctant at first to participate in an activity like this. I had no real desire to do it. But after we got going it was a lot of fun. We all tried our best not to get stuck or to flip over--unless it was intentional. It really was a lot of fun and we were the envy of our entire group.

Fondest memory: Even though this wasn't around Doha it was one of my most memorable times while I was in Qatar. I took for granted all the desert and lack of trees around the outskirts of the manicured cities. But there is a distinct beauty to the dunes that border the Gulf shoreline. They are beautiful and worth the visit.

Favorite thing: While the skyscrapers go up at the edges of the city downtown Doha is still a low-rise kind of place. Concrete, whitewashed shops, restaurants, and offices are the norm.
