Gold souq by ElCidRugger Doha has many different kinds of shops, but the souqs are the most enjoyable to shop at. There are different sections of the souq that specialize in certain goods. I always go to the gold souqs before going home so I can have nice presents for my friends. There are also pearl souqs for those who want a little piece of Arabia to take home with them. There are many different kinds of shops, so it is best to walk and explore.
Gold, pearls, you name it!
Always, always haggle. The price on the item is just a starting point for negotiations. Don't be rude about it, just be persuasive. Leave a Comment Theme: JewelryDirections: Any taxi driver can get you there and there are street signs.

by ElCidRugger This place has everything. The Carrefour inside the mall is the best and largest grocery store in the city. The mall has four levels with an ice skating rink, a bowling alley, a water park, and an amusement park with roller coasters. This place has everything you could possibly need. This is the other mall in Doha. This one is a spartan one floor compared to the behemoth four story Carrefour mall. The Hyatt mall is actually a decent place to shop. The place has a grocery store (Giant Stores I think) that has a bakery, fresh produce and a butcher. They also have a lot of home goods, electronics, pretty much everything. Within the mall are some fine jewelry stores (skip 'em and go to the souqs), a decent food court, and the typical mall fare (electronics shops, clothing stores, photo stores, etc.) This is a good place to head if you live pretty far from the Corniche as you don't have to go so far into town to get your shopping done.
The bakery has some outstanding local treats as well as a good variety of international food. They also have a great section for fresh nuts, beans, and grains.
Not too exorbatant. Pretty reasonable prices as far as I could tell. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Pretty sure it is on the D ring roadDirections: Get on the D ring road heading away from the Corniche and look for the huge green shopping cart (I'm not kidding).

City Center Mall Entrance-Doha by bpwillet There have been few occasions where I have ever spent so much time in a mall. This trip to Qatar was different. City Center Mall has many shops to choose from and many that will be recognizable to you from any country you may be travelling from. I was more interested in local handicrafts and had a difficult time navigating the souks. If you are looking for these types of items try the Afghani Bazaar or the two rug stores near it. If you need a pick me up after your shopping, you can choose something from the many Starbucks dotted throughout the mall.
You can buy many items from brass coffee pots, antique Arabian daggers, Palestinian pottery, and inlay wood work boxes and incense burners. You can also find some berber jewlery as well as more modern styles. The Iranian rugs at Bradaran and the Antique City behind it offer a wide array of styles to choose from from all different time periods and prices.
Rugs can be expensive especially for pure silk, but the other items are reasonably priced and can very depending upon age and type of item. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: City Center Mall

See my travelogue about these older Souqs for a more visual image. Basically, the government is renovating the historic center of the old shopping district. They're removing Neon signs and unsightly air conditioning units, and replacing them with wood door frames and traditional morter and stone walls and simple lighting...... Walking within the old souqs may have been the highlight of my visits to Doha! The smell of leather, spices and perfumes mixed up my nose and sent me back in time......I wander around curiously. Souq Waqif is the old covered market that originally started out as a weekend market for Bedouins to come into town and trade their wool and meat for staple goods. It had become quite modernized, but there is now a major overhaul underway in an effort to get rid of the neon signs and aluminum doors and return to traditional architecture. While there is still much contruction going on (as there is in all of Doha), the parts that have been completed are very interesting to walk around in. It's a pleasant contrast to the modern architecture found in the rest of the city. While Souq Waqif Street - the main outside pathway shown in the photo - is a good place to shop for local handicrafts and other souvenirs, the maze of alleyways inside is geared more towards the daily needs of local people. Here you can find spices, fabrics, kitchenwares, tools, traditional dress, and even pom poms and other accessories for your camel. The best time to come is the late afternoon, around 5pm. If you come to early you're likely to find most of the shops closed. Theme: Local CraftDirections: Just north of Grand Hamad Street, one block in from the Corniche.

by jungles What a testament to this country's love for shopping. This gigantic shopping cart (or trolley, or buggy, depending on where you're from) stands proudly in front of the Hyatt Plaza shopping mall. The mall has the usual shops you'd expect to find in a mall, as well as a food court (try the Yum Yum Tree), an indoor amusement park for kids called The Jungle Zone, and a large grocery store with cheaper prices than others around town. This is one of five malls in Doha, all of which are pretty popular places for the locals to hang out. The others are City Centre (the most popular), Centrepoint (the newest), Landmark, and another which is just called The Mall, as it's the oldest and so for a time was the only mall in Doha. The Landmark - a class of its own. The boutiques occupying the mall are mostly caters to upper class customers. Thursday night was dedicated for families. As I am travelling with my workmate, we decided to eat first at Friday's. After our dinner (we finished around 9pm), that's the only time the security guard allowed us to enter the shopping mall. Taxi is very hard to find in this area. There was a display of Ducati motorcycles, Lamborghini and latest model of Volkswagen when we visited the mall.

This family-owned shop has a wide array of pearls, in all forms of natural colors and sizes. It was an educational experience to visit. The man is patient with answering questions about the pearls. His father comes in and out very often to greet customers. (He will be closed for about two months during April/May 2006) He's going sailing.
This is THE local source for pearls. His prices are far below any of the prices at the Souqs. Leave a Comment Theme: JewelryPhone: +974 435 1021Directions: Located in Al Remailah (formerly Al Bida) Park, in a slightly hidden shopping plaza.Website: tatoly66@hotmail.com

by travelmad478 If you're tired of the sterility of Doha's big, high-priced malls, take yourself over to one of the many souks around town. These offer a more interesting, not to mention cheaper, shopping experience. You can find just about anything you need in them. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
