Doha - The Capital of Qatar
With just 400,000 residents, Doha is Qatar's largest city, its capital, and home to about 80 percent of the country's population. Doha was founded as a fishing port in 1825, and it has made great strides from these humble beginnings. In 1916, Doha became the capital city of the British protectorate of Qatar, and it remained the capital city when Qatar was granted independence in 1971.
Qatar is an modern city that is home to Al-Jazeera (the Arabic news channel), University of Qatar, Qatar National Museum, and the Museum of Islamic Art.
See a desert sunrise
"And the long night has finally come to an end ..."
The most beautiful time of the day--and perhaps the only beautiful time of the day--is sunrise, when the air still has a bit of a chill and sky slowly changes to shades of purple, orange, and red, before the hellish fireball called the sun, which kills almost everything here, arrives over this distant horizon. Sunrise is when people awake and renew their daily struggle of life in the desert; it is also when the animals, better adapted than humans, seek shelter and avoid the penetrating heat of the day.

Al Shahania Camel Race track
We spent a few hours driving around the race track watching the camels getting trained. It's kinda cool to see these big lazy-looking animals run with great speed...
All around the racetrack there are a road for the cars, so it's possible to follow them around the whole track.
In the afternoon there are usually races...
Clear blue waters of the north
If you get a chance to spend some time exploring Qatar (most of the country can be seen as long day trips), be sure to stop in Al Shamal. It is a town on the north west corner (as the name suggests) and is a sleepy fishing town. There is not much to do there however if you go around the town the harbor is quite nice and there are a few restaurants and juice bars to step into. The people are very friendly and hospitable.Related to:

The Docks and the Fishing Fleets
In stark contrast to the Corniche and the relatively modern buildings that line it are the docks which cater to the fishing fleets of Qatar. The commercial fishing vessels are the classic designs of the Arabian Gulf. Little has changed apart from the transition from Sail to Diesel Engines. You will see the fisherman going about their jobs, fixing nets, unloading catches and repairing their vessels.Related to:
