A highlight on a Qatar trip is a desert tour threw the dunes in south of the country. The Qataris are really spezialists in climbing and sliding the dunes with their Jeeps.
Just ask in your hotel for a tour, they will arrange it for you.

The dunes are amazing. The shape of them, their height make just seeing them a pleasant trip. Trying to climb them is hard on the leg muscles, but from the tracks in the sand it is obvious that driving up the dunes is apopular past time.
Looking in the distance , the gas and oil facilities can be seen.
It is worth taking the time to drive and see this area.

The deserts of Qatar

Look mom, I'm on the moon! No, just the desert.

About 94 percent of the land of Qatar is flat, barren desert with barely a tree or a hill to be seen for miles around. Average high temperatures in the summer months tend to hover around 106 degrees Fahrenheit, though higher temperatures are common. Rainfall is typically less than two inches for the entire year, falling mostly in the winter. Most of the country's drinking water is obtained through desalinization of Persian Gulf water. The only animals I've ever seen in Qatar are sly desert fox and annoying flies.

Desert Safari

The desert Safari was one of the funniest things I did when I was in Qatar. Driving up and down the BIG sand dunes with a crazy driver, who likes to fly lol Believe me, it is better than a rollercoaster ride, if you get a good driver... :) And you get to see the Inland sea, maybe camels, and just get to drive around the desert... remember to enjoy every minute of it, cos the desert in Qatar is amazing!!

Limestone outcrops near Bir Zekreet

If you love deserts (like I do), Qatar is a great country for you. Just grab a car from any rental companies, fill the tank in Doha (believe it or not, it is not easy to find petrol stations in the countryside), and head out to the desert. In the north you can find stony deserts, while sand dunes can be found in the south, close to the Saudi borderlines.
Don't miss the limestone outcrops at Bir Zekreet (it is a tiny village in the West, near Dukhan) and the sand dunes south of Mesaieed.

There are not many places in the world, where you can do skiing in the sand!
It's quite steep but the slope is not very long and walking up again (with 40°C) is realy exhausting.
