While cruising the highway (from Ras Laffan to Doha), we normally drive at 120 kph since this is the maximum speed limit allowed in the highway. But you will always be surprised that there will be an overspeeding vehicles that will overtake you (maybe cruising at 150kph or more). Just be careful and stay on the right side of the road or else vehicles faster than you will flash their headlights constantly until you change lane.
That is why there are lots of warning signs along the highway to drive safely.
By the way, most of the vehicles here in Doha are not the typical meddium built sedan. Most of them are SUVs and bigger.
Very often I see hitchhikers (mostly Indians, Pakistani and Nepali) who are standing at the roadside and making a gesture of a request for free ride. Not that I am against in hitchhiker but the risk of getting hit by speeding vehicles eventhough they are standing at the shoulder of the road.
We are not also sure about our own safety should you allow them to ride with you. Who knows. Just be careful.
Actually driving in Qatar is not worse than many other cities in the world, but still it seems like they got no traffic rules. Though I was told they actually do :p People just think that those rules are made up for them to break them lol
One can easily think it's silly to keep the speed limit of 120 km/h when driving on a straight road in the desert with noone else around. Be careful though since sometimes there are pretty big holes on the countryside roads.
As everything here is strict, driving any vehicle is very difficult as well. You should only drive if u have got a Driving License. Moreover, if u are a foreigner and u have done an accident, u will be immidiately deported back to your country instead of giving u a fine slip. It has happened in the past. My cousin's friend got deported beccause of this law. So, please be careful and better take a taxi instead of taking any risk.
Doha is a safe place to be (with regards to security) for the exception of their driving which is indescribable. My first impression when first driving there was:' have I got myself into a racetrack by mistake or what?” Some really drive as if they're in a big hurry to get themselves killed and mostly without noticing others (whether in a car or a pedestrian) so be VERY CAREFUL!
