Coming to Saudi Arabia can be a bit daunting for the Western traveller, it is a real culture shock for some and others look at it as an experience and think "Hey it's not that bad out here". Unfortunately there is very little to do out here and Shopping plays a huge role in Entertainment for both the Saudi's and Expats.
One thing many expats like to do is get together with their friends that they have made and have BBQ's, Dinner parties or even go out to some of the nice restaurants around their city. In Al Khobar many expats get a Multiple Visa which allows them to nip across the Causeway to the Kingdom of Bahrain where they can go out to a Pub and order a alcoholic drink or see a Movie in a Picture theatre.
Yes the illegal drink is here, and there are people who do brew it, I personally stay away from that scene as I don't want to get involved so usually I will get together with friends and bring along a plate of food to share and have a nice evening. Sometimes the ole Pictionary or cards comes out and everyone has fun playing games like these... in fact it kind of reminds me of the good old days when we didn't have the Internet or Computer games and when families sat down together at the dinner table and shared their day with one another, only the family aren't there but your friends that you have made that come from every corner of the globe.
Dress Code: Your dress code is what you want it to be while you are on a Compound or in the privacy of your own home. When going out in Public, woman are asked to wear the "Abbaya" a black cloak which covers their body from their shoulders to their feet. Both genders should be dressed sensibly and nothing that is too revealing or skimpy should be worn.
Sometimes Compounds have a little bit of fun and a theme night may be on. Recently when I went to one place, they had an "Indian" night on and many of the woman who dined at the Restaurant were wearing Sari's of all sorts of colours. I guess the beautiful thing about living here is that one can travel to some great countries and bring back some amazing things such as the national dress from the country that they were visiting.
Well, what did you expect in Saudi Arabia?!!! There is no night life here except within the compounds of the Saudi Aramco complex which is out of bounds to most people unless you know somebody there!!! Eat and be merry seems to be the way they enjoy nightlife here!!! No drinks at all!!! Except Coke or Pepsi ofcourse!!!
Dress Code: Wear anything you want as long as it covers your body well enough not to get stares from the people or warnings from the police!!!
