Al Rashid Mall: The biggest mall in the country

by iwys Written Jan 11, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Al Rashid Mall is the biggest shopping centre in Saudi Arabia. Its design is based on a traditional Arab fort and inside there are fountains.

The mall has an extensive food court, amusements and numerous boutiques and designer clothes outlets.

This is the place where most of the local youngsters hang out at night.

    Tamimi Safeway: The Best Supermarket

by iwys Written Jan 11, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Tamimi Safeway is the best supermarket in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia for wealthy expatriates. It has the widest range of imported goods, ranging from breakfast cereals to pet foods.

However, this is not the best place to buy local goods or fruit and vegetables, as the prices are much higher than elsewhere.

If you are looking for a particular product from back home, this is a great place; if you want great value for money, it is not.

Shopping, its a way of life here!

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Shop till you drop!

Saudi Arabia on the whole is a real shoppers paradise, there is an abundance of shops to satisfy the most diserning shopper.

Because there is very little to do out here, many people hit the shops from the time they open their doors till the time they close them at night and during prayer times.

Al Rashid Mall is perhaps the largest shopping mall to be found in Saudi Arabia and it is right here in Al Khobar. It has a terrific selection of womans clothing shops and men's and children's clothing too.

What to buy: While in Al Khobar, be out on the lookout for any of the beautiful authentic Arabian gift shops downtown such as in King Khalid Street and in the Souqs. A hubbly bubbly or waterpipe might make an interesting gift but check with your Home country's laws before taking one home. Unfortunately in New Zealand where I come from, these are illegal and are considered a piece of cannabis equipment. Then there are the beautiful carpets, a good idea is to take a friend along who is experienced in carpet making and knows what weave etc... to look for, you can easy get ripped off by purchasing a synthetic one if you aren't careful. Then there is the gold. Most of the jewellery out here is 24ct which is the bright yellow variety, for a fair skinned person like myself it looks terrible so I have to ask about the 18ct which they frown upon saying its not a 'true' gold. The trouble is though is that alot of it looks heavy but in fact it is very light and very hollow, unfortunately I have had to take my necklaces back more than once for repairs.
Other goods to purchase include items from other cultures such as from other Arab lands and India. I have found a terrific little Indian shop at the Gulf centre on the corniche and have bought alot of items for just under 200 riyals such as a small marble chess set, marble egg, brassware and so on.

What to pay: The best thing do is half the cost the seller is trying to sell you and then barter your way through until you reach a price that you and both the seller are comfortable with. Look out for the big sales too as you can find some good finds particularly during Ramadan or around Eid.
